So, for my band's next project, I'll be recording on my brand new notebook. Its a notebook, so i can't use my pci digi001 with sonar like I have in the past, so its time for something new.

I just need something with one or two mic pres, as we'll be using sequenced drums, so i just have to worry about doing guitar, bass, and vox through whatever I buy. I'd also like it to have built in pres as it just makes it easier that way.

I'm currently torn between the m-audio fw series, or the presonus fire series.

How come the presonus ones aren't listed on cakewalks website? are there problems?

And are there any other brands i should be looking at?

I just bought an M-Audio Firewire solo, I have Sonar 3 producer.

I havent tried any other interfaces so I have no point of reference for comparision. I paid $199, works fine, took maybe 1 minute to install. It's as simple as it gets: two pre-amps on the front (one with XLR input), two line inputs on back and S/pdif. Phantom power, headphone jack, doesnt need a power supply (although one is supplied for older firewire ports I think).

Sonar gets along with it famously, its a no-brainer. Learning curve is zero, just plug it in and use it. Cool blue power light on front, clipping lights on front.

I was using a Darla24 and a spirit F1 mixer for preamp before. This sounds better to me. Nice and sturdy. I dont know what you mean by "my band", it only has two pres, hence the name "solo": it's basically designed for a mic and a guitar, and a synth input on back. For the price, I think it was a great buy.

get the fw-410. i had one forever, and it never failed me. pre-sonus is a little over-rated if you ask me. i'll sell you a fw 410...want it?
