best setup for a 3 peicec band in a 15X15 room..

k im in a band, and were trying to do some recording, at the same time, like we all play the song at once and record.... what would be the best setup for recording.. we have some mics cables and a tascam 8 trtack reel to reel sound board. i think 388 ?? great board.. the walls in the room are treated...


how should i mic the guitar amp? the drums and the bass amp?? i was thinking line in the bass amp, mic the guitar amp and uyse two mics on the drums. one over head and one in the bass.. i could construct a make shift drum blocker wall thingie if needed i have wood hinges and carpet..

notes.. both amps guitar and bass are 100 watts ampeg bass cab and marshal guitar cab. drummer plays loud....


please help me were goin in to record some instrumental demops this weekend ! thanks for all the help.

Bomber - You don't mention what mics you have (SM57's will do fine) but:

Mike the guitar amp from the front. One mic, a couple of inches from the speaker. You might consider putting the guitar amp in a different room from the drums. If not, make your drum blocker though it may not help too much.

You could go with three/four mics on the drums Bass,snare two overs...

Go direct with the bass, get everyone headphones to hear it along with the guitar in the mix. If the Ampeg bass amp has a line out you can probably feed that into the board otherwise you will need a DI box. I don't recommend playing the bass (amplified) in the same room as the other stuff.

You also didn't mention vocals... consider adding them as a separate take.

Let each mic / di have it's own track and jam away man!

Your basic setup sounds right. Go for it.

-You may need to play with mic placement a little.

k well im not sure what mics we have... im sure my friend would let me borrow his 57's how much do those retail for?? so you guys think i should put the bass amp in the hallway?? or try to add in my bass tracks last??? also i only have 8 tracks so i guess fourmics on the drums one on the guitar amp and xlr line out on my bass rig ?? and we have vocals last on tracks 7 and 8 wahoo


so any ideas on placement?? should i aim the guitaar amp at the wall??


also. couldnt iplay withthe bass turned down real low and mix it up later??

There are many different approaches you may take.

Isolating the Bass in another room is ok.

Tracking individually is ok.

Either way is ok. Maybe try producing a few cuts, both ways, and then decide which way you prefer.

-Basically, if you have a "live" sound, and prefer to play together, then that is probably the "best" way to record, [playing together, simultaneously], to capture your "real" sound.

If you play together and record all your parts simultaneously, then isolating the bass in the hallway may be the best idea.

-If you break your tracks apart, and track them individually, then isolation is 100%, but [as you know], by tracking individually, it's a little harder to capture your "live" sound, but with enough practice, it's do-able.

Again, experiment with producing tapes both ways, and then decide which you prefer.

heres what its setup like now, we recorded some tonight. i made a make shift drum shield out of 5 guitar cases those worked damn well! haha i used one over head mike hanging from a rafter and a mic in the kick and on near the snare and hi hats! great recording! couldnt hear bass or guitars on the drum tracks! ill post recordigns as soon as i get them on the pc

Baffles can be good for sound isolation.

There are many flexible options, and there's no one right way.

Even mic positioning can isolate instruments, to a large degree.

SM57's are the red hot deal at Guitar Center in December, with SM57 + cable + stand for $80.

That's not a deal, it's a steal!

just need some better mics for those drums!! haha this was with us al playing at once at normal playing volume.. i built the wall with 8 guitar casses and used three mics.. on in kick one near snare and hi hats and one over head..
