with my experiance in recording drums

i seem to get the best results with:

instead of putting up two overheads i place 1 LDC mic about a foot over the drummers head

has anyone else had this experiance?????

maybe ive always just used shitty overheads ??

i dont know

Drum Mics

Back when I first started, I actually used to get really good results with:

One SM58 over the drummer's head pointing straight down

One SM58 sitting on the bass drum on a pillow to get the hi toms

A SM58 on the floor kinda tilted up into the low tom

SM58 pointed at the clicker of the bass drum from the drummer's side

Did a drum session in my small room last night, and we used a single at4047 in that same spot, along w/ a d6 on the kick, atm23 on the snare, and a tape op ribbon out in front.

yeah a lot of people do that. I have gotten good results mic'ing snare from a couple feet out instead of right on the rim. you also might want to try putting the mic out in front of the drum kit...
