Like I said, Tape Op is a good *read*.
I like reading the articles, they often have great interviews with big name producers/engineers, like the last issue has a great one with Reinhold Mack, who recorded Queen, ELO, Billy Squire, and others, and I enjoy reading about who did what/when, as often you gain some new insight into well known artists.
.

Those are the interviews I LOL at. That kind of stuff just doesn't relate to me, or I don't relate to it. I couldn't care less how Brian May recorded his guitar. I'm not him, I don't have his gear, nor do I have a limitless supply of money and equipment to throw at a recording.

I was reading one interview one time and I think it was some dude that recorded Wilco maybe? Anyway, he said he hung an amp from the ceiling over a stairwell and pointed it downwards towards the stairs. WTF? That's the kind of pompous "experimentation" that reverse inspires me to be nothing like that.

Well...it's not just about weird recording experiments or how some guy recorded his guitar. :D

I know what you mean, some stuff makes you wanna just say "so what?"....but there's also info that can be used (without the need to own the same equipment they had), and some of it is just an interesting read AFA anecdotes and trivia.
Personally, I would rather read about the behind-the-scenes stuff that occurred on some Led Zeppelin (insert whatever artist/band you like) recording session or tour...
...than the boring shit like "How To Get Fat Bass Tracks"....or..."10 tips To Great Vocals". ;)

Not all articles are equally interesting, but IMO, Tape Op constantly has more of them than any other audio rag.

It's no different than reading anything else that may be of some interest to you...or not.

I thought everyone did this? :laughings:

Any magazine that details how Brian May got his sound and encourages others to follow is a crime against humanity... I'm looking forward to seeing the prosecution at The Hague...

I never pay for anything with the word "Pro" in it unless its followed by "stitute", dead, and dumpster :D

Okay, the first one, I get. But what the heck is a "prodead," or a "produmpster??"

On the other hand, some rock bigwig detailing how they got 'their' sound is useful. It shows just how hit and miss the whole affair was......I don't believe that the guitarists from the 50s, 60s and 70s 'heard a sound in their heads and went off in search of it' and found it. And somehow persuaded the other guitarists, keyboardists, bassists, drummers and other instrumentalists to somehow work their own sounds around this magical tone.
Either way, I'll meet you in Den Haag ! It used to be a rather murky city by night.....:D

I can't tell, was that supposed to be sarcasm?

Kevin Shields' experimentation with amp and mic placement was way more creative than that. He didn't do it so much to be pretentious as to create bizarre, otherworldly soundscapes. Whether one finds the results inspiring depends on one's preconceptions about how a recording should sound, I suppose.

But their stuff isn't bizarre or otherworldly. It's just douchey hipster rock.

That may be why I'm not familiar with their work. I have a pathological aversion to douchey hipsterism. :D

If you were in Australia I would recommend "Audio Technology" magazine. Come to think of it I would recommend it to anyone anywhere in the world, absolutely no bulls#$it in this mag, unlike a lot of others around.

I do also read "Sound on Sound" from the UK.

Cheers
Alan.

This is true - it's a great read, and also really cheap, last time I bought a copy...

Unfortonatly Armistice, while I was finding the link to the Audio Technology web site I can across the Bruce Jackson news.

Yes, I read that in your other post. Very sad... I remember Jands as quite a small company! Didn't know they'd gone global.

Cheers
