So how's about it? One of my picks is the sound on Morphine's Cure For Pain album. The sparse instrumentation of the group really lets the intonation of the drums and cymbals shine. Also, I like the drum sound on Resident Alien (the whole disc) by Spacehog. Well-tuned drums can't be beat.

Drum tone on Steely Dan's 2 against nature is crazay.....the snare is super biting, but not hard on the ears. The drums on John Mayer's "Room for Squares" though is my personal pick, though some people on this board seem to think they're electronic.......I dunno......they sound acoustic to me.

I'm a metal-guy..... I've always had a softspot in my heart for Sepultura's drums.....

I didn't give this much though but probably one of my favorites at the moment would have to be the who "baba o'riley". Have any of you heard Beachwood Sparks? Their new album also has some amazing drum sounds in it. Good music, too. Check them out.

The Who "Won't Get Fooled Again" is also seriously good.

Somehow I also like the stairwell reverb whatever in When the levee breaks...really cool stuff.

the sound on faith no mores king for a day album is really nice and tight, and dirty three's horse stories sound is very impressive

is that "when the levee breaks" sound a reverb or a delay? I always thought it was delay...

I read it was recorded with one mic at the top of a stone spiral staircase in the Alistar Crowly castle that Jimie Page bought. But there is so much myth that follows Zepplin that its hard to know. Id like to believe it.

The drum sound of Tool, on pretty much any albumn, but especailly on Undertow. Its big. very big.

My fave drum sound is on Cassandra Wilson's Blue Skies Album (jazz) - so sweet, man.

Deftones around the fur has some good tones on drums. Same with Tool's aenima...same with Blink 182's take off your pants and jacket.

here's a bit of ego...

My favorite drum sound is mine...:)

Seriously.. I took all qualities of the drums I like and carved them into my drum sound.. Im very happy with it...

But some Decent Drum sounds I can list are...

Def leppard- Adrenalize
Shania Twain- Come on Over

Im a little bit strange... I have never heard a live drumsound that makes me as happy as I am with well sequenced samples...

Both those albums are pretty much all sequenced samples....

I just like perfection....

Alice n' Chains "Jar of Flies, album had an ok sound too... that one sticks out for me for decent "live" drums....

but I still find it "messy sounding"

Check out Def leppard's.. 'Lets Get Rocked" and that is "Drum Heaven" for me...

As I recall the Levee Breaks drum sound was actually recorded in a stair well. They had the drums on the first floor and some mics up on the higher floors to get the natural reverb and slap back.

Another vote for Tool, though I prefer the sound on Lateralus to Ænima. Very honest sound, almost retro, but too much clarity to be retro. The cymbals have amazing seperation and clarity as well. Also, the mixing of Danny Carey's electronics is flawless, as is his playing.

I like Ginger Baker's Toad, off Wheels of Fire.

I heard it was recorded using only two overheads.

That's the drum solo that I've listened to the most.

I tend to favor raw unprocessed sounds like that of Snot and Step Kings. Older sounds that I like mimic that same desire for a natural minimalist recorded sound; Zepplin, Who.

But have you noticed over the years that drum sounds in contemporary music have evolved just as much as sounds for guitar, keys, and even vocals.

It seems that right now, there has been more diversity than ever in the types of sounds and processing (or lack thereof) for drums.

Drum sounds and tones have become as signature to a musical expression these days as the guitar and vocal.

Agreed. I like how unmuffled drums are featured on a lot of recordings these days, like the Morphine album I mentioned, for example. I love old seventies Talking Heads and Devo, but the drums sound like cardboard boxes.

Another vote for Tool's Lateralus. Have been listening to it non-stop. You can tell he's been shaping his set and his sound for a long time and now he's got a real nice result.

I think it helps that Danny Carey did an awesome job writing his percussion parts, showing that drums should not only complement the music, but become part of the music. I have to also agree with Elevate on the flawless mixing of the eletronics with his drums, he is trully a knowledgeable musicians and talented percussionist.
Really shows how much you can do when you take the time to think out your percussion parts.

Best Drum Sound

Some of the best drum sounds i have ever heard are Sepultura, Metallica, Pantera, they all have that real giant sound but very close attention to small details that keep it tight sounding

Karate!!!

The best drum sounds I've heard would be on Karate's third album, The Bed Is In The Ocean. Amazing room sounds. Well, check out any Karate album for that matter.
