marley marl should definatly go down in the hall of fame as one of if not the best hip-hop producers but as of now is what my list refers to.otherwise I`d have noted Rick Ruben,Grandmaster Flash,Afrika Bambatta and so on.

Premier

Dr. Dre

Timbaland

The old Q-Tip

Puffy's Team (Give It Up Yall)

The Neptunes (I call them the Babyfaces of rap cause all their beats sound the same IMHO)

and for R&B, R. KElly's Producers

For Old School Heads...

Large Professor
Marly Marl
The Bomb Squad
Pete Rock

TOP PRODUCERS!!!

OK people....I am new to posting here, but when I saw this forum discussion I had to post.....so heres my take on the game of producing

Hands down....in my opinion....Numero Uno is ......

1.DRE - think about all the things he has done from niggaz4life...to the new mary J song with jada in the remix!...hot hot hot hot.... (just my opinion)
2. Timbaland - i agree with alot of what has been said about him...definitely a unique style...and keeps them coming
3. Organized noise - they definitely hot....look how many hip hop hits outkast had?...like 4 and 5 mics from source every time

4.trackmasters are hot too...they had a lot of hits..

5.Noone has even mentioned Jurmaine Dupri!!!! Talk about hits???? everything he touches blows up....from kris kross to brat...to JE...to lil bow wow.....the man got a formula that works.

6. puff daddy....cmon peoples ...love him or hate him...the man gotta get his props....he done made some hot shit....(personally i can't stand him) but he has made producing a definite mainstream thang
7. honarable mentions....definitely priemier....

and if we talkin R&B producers.....sheeeeiiit.....that walter alfansomehting dude that does mariahs shit got skillz....and definitely....without a doubt....hottest RB producers....

babyface!!
rkelly
hands down

PEACE

got's to mention ANT BANKS for too short, Also did hitz for the Luniz, dru down, spice 1, Dangerous crew, rappin 4tay etc
just think of all that tight ass Oakland funk Bass

E-40 has a stinky funk oozing out of his studio, also B ligit, Celly cell.

Cedric Singleton CEO from Black Market Records has some tight gangsta sh*t, AWOL comes out with nice beats especially Lunasicc, These are nothing like whats on the radio and I got's to give it up for Sacramento artists....

I never understood timberlands stuff, I always try to make my tracks playable live, meaning at anypoint, If I wanted to, I could go assemble a band, and play the song. Timberlands stuff is all off beat and non flowing and too cut up. Maybe because I have played an actual drumset for 10+ years, both funk and Metal, as well as pop style, and have been into producing rap for only a year or so.

Did anyone mention Eric B and Rakim? I think they deffenetly rank up there with Guru and Premier (gangstarr)

and Are you kidding?? Puffy puff? I want to state it here first that he should be Arrested on charges of Music Abuse. How can he say he's even a producer, all he did was take old hit's, sample them, add in a lame simple and repetitive drum loop, and get some sloppy slurring rappers to re hash old lyrics with some new, and put them out for the public. It only sold hella in the beginning because it sounded familiar, then Biggie died, and who is the only one left to take the credit (not to mention the money)

Easy E's stuff tword the end was hella good, producers Rhythm D and Big Hutch aka Cold 187um are the true originators of G-Funk , not Dr dre, allthough Dre's sh*t is bomb too

Adding Eightball And MJG because they deserve to be heard

Welcome to this BBS, ErikG and COEprods. :)

ncorea
I'm with you on the Marley Marl.

peace... :D

Old school producers... you gotta' mention,

Mark the 45 King

:D

Actually Puffy really doesn't really produce songs. I actually meant his team of producers (the hitmen or something like that). The stand out producer being D-Dot (aka the madd rapper) he did that beat for "the Benjamins" and more.

Spinster, who is Mark the 45 king? What songs? just I have defenitly heard everybody else, but....?

I forgot RED ALERT, Mixmaster Mike (SAC-TOWN!!!!!), and the beastie boys. They did most of there own stuff, even played real instraments, sampled and looped them, they were just tight. And to think at first it was all a joke......

Who is Mark the 45??!! From recent fame he did Stan off of Eminem's album, he also did that party anthem that the "let me clear my throat" guy bit. Can't remember the name.

ya know, I diddnt really like STAN, As far as the let me clear my throat part, I thought that was Red Alert......my bad.
What else??? you gotta forgive me, on the west coast we aint feelin the east coast so much ( I thinks it's all that warm sunny weather we have :) so it's not the easiest to find, unless it's HUGE

45 King

The 45 King did most Queen Latifas stuff back in the day and that "Let me clear my Throat" was DJ Kool, which the beat was from "the 900 number" by the 45 King. He also did Jay Z's "Hard Knock Life" and "Stan" for Eminem. Plus much, much more.

Mark the 45 King also produced Chill Rob G's first album "Ride the Rhythm", LATEE's "This Cut Got Flavor", and Lakim Shabazz, but like previously stated the song that put him into "legendary" status was the "900 Number" (the one that ED Lover used for his "Ed Lovers Dance" on Yo MTV Raps). :D

I guess I'm showing my age.... :)

peace...

The origanal song from "900 Number" is Marva Whitney's "Unwind Yourself" if anyones interested in that.

I just noticed this thread and felt that I had to reply to Trak's dis of Pimp C of UGK. I'm not sure whether Pimp C is the main producer or it's a combo of he and Bun B, but Cat was right in his praise of them. I would not say that they are the best in the world, but if you listen to their body of work, then you cannot help but appreciate them(unless you have strict preferences and are unwilling to do so). Damn those boys are creative! Seriously! And don't think that I am someone from the South who only listens to Master P type stuff. I recognize great production work no matter what segment of hip hop it comes from. Unlike so-called hot producers like Neptunes and Swiss(between the two I can count maybe 5 or 6 beats that I can appreciate), these guys always come with something fresh and creative. They never make those simple syncopated beats with the same tired drum sounds that sound like they were made on one keyboard in about 20 minutes(ie. Jada Kiss's "Knock Ya Self Out"). Ugk's production is generally complex and deep. They honestly have a great deal of taste and cleverness both beat wise and lyric wise. And this is coming from someone whose favorite groups of alltime are A Tribe called Quest, P.E. , and Outcast.

WHO IS DA NEPTUNES?

IS IT ME OR DO THE NEPTUNES USE THE SAME SNARE ON ALL OF THEIR BEATS......

Sho you right Fingaz. The Neptunes not only use the same basic set of sounds, but they repeat alot of the same rhythms and patterns in songs they produce. "Lapdance" is basically the same as the song they did with Babyface. The song they did for Philly's Finest is basically the same as the new "Slave" song they did for Britney Spears. "Shake It Fast" sounds alot like some other song they did. It's everything wrong with rap(I cannot call it hip hop) music today. Completely souless, flavorless, and unorigional. Completely unwilling to take real chances and be creative. They would not be able to get away with production techniques like this in the late 80's or early 90's. But then again, the music indusrty as a whole is putting out crap that they would not have been able to get away with in the past. I'm not a hater - I just like to hear stuff that gives me the feeling you cared about how it came out and exercised some taste.
