just wanted to know your opinions on who to look at in hip hop producing. If I had to pick 5, I wouldnt be able to. But if I could mention a few Id say;

Automator
Numark/Cut Chemist
Prince Paul
Old Dr Dre (not as in Dr Dre and Ed Lover but as in Chronic)
J Rawls
Timbaland
Outkast always good production same with Beatnuts
Hi Tek

Im wondering how the hell they do it, especiall Automator. Is it all rehashed samples? Im definently hearing some synths too. I mean, where do you begin?

Just to add a few.....

Kut Masta Kurt

Premier

Dr Dre, new and old (sorry about that, but thats how I truly feel) :)

Neptunes

I'm forgetting a lot of names, so I'll have to post you back later.

just a few thoughts

Greatest of all time: Primo (by far)

Current favorites: JayDee (Slum Vill), Madlib (Lootpack), Hi-Tek; Shadow

Hall of Famers: Pete Rock, Prince Paul, Diamond, Bomb Squad (to name a few), RZA (early stuff), Dre (old stuff only :D ), Beatnuts (they should stick to production only)

I also like the Neptunes production but sometimes it's hard to really dig the production when you don't like the artist featured on the produced track.

That's all I can think of, for now.

what about when he's not with primo? I need to go read some liner notes, i guess.

xoxo

I'd have to say the best producers are:

Timbaland
Dr. Dre
Rockwilda
Neptunes
Battlecat
Premier

H-Bomb, Praha, Paul Oakenfold, Rouge and Halo Varga
But i only know one track by Halo Varga... "Future" but it's one of my all time favorite tracks.
Maybe i'll have to add Mac Zimms (at about -5% pitch :D ) and X Press 2

Pimp who?

i'd say Pimp C from UGK

I'm sorry but I wouldn't even count him as a good artist let alone a good producer. I not even sure that he falls under the catergory of producer. What has he done for anyone else that was super hot? To be a producer you must produce for more than you and your group. Sorry!

dr dre- nwa, chronic, doggystyle, chronic 2001,eminem etc
timbaland- aalyah, missy, ginuwine, petey, bubba, magoo, etc
trackmasters- r kelly, nas, foxy etc
battlecat- snoop, eastsidaz, etc

Personally, I like timbaland because his creativity seems to be copy-protected because I don't know if there is anyone now who can copy it. (or even come close) Timbaland has changed the game and should go down in history. I also like dr dre. I feel that his newer material is not on the same level as the old material but I guess that clinton lawsuit has kept him from continuing to use those funk samples he stole. But I still give him all the credit, because he made the game.(even if das really did make all his old beats he got the credit) Nobody was making any real money before dre came out with nwa. Before that and the chronic, record companies didn't think that rap could go 5x platinum. After dre, then the money started coming and it shows in the videos.

I do like a couple of songs by the neptunes but I do believe that they will fade out or fade in and out like darkchild. Give them two years. Once, you get hot, people jump on the tip. But look, even cash money has lasted three or four years and I thought that most of their production sounds like my Fagio keyboard, but they're still here so.

I love battlecat. I think he is where dre was ten years ago as far as creativity levels. He is very underrated. And so are trackmasters. Trackmasters make some of the most classic beats, the kind that most people wouldn't usually dare to make.

Also whoever makes trick daddy's beats. If he makes his own then yeah. I still wouldn't call him a producer though, just a good beatmaker.

you HAVE TO include
JIMMY JAM and TERRI LEWIS

(sorry, i just remembered)

Sorry chucknkd but this is a hip hop forum, notice how nobody has mentioned brian mcknight, babyface, etc?

theres such a fine line. timbaland and dallas austin would definately cover a broad range as well as jerkins. sorry 'bout the confusion, it wont happen again. they still rok! ;)

It doesn't matter whether this is a hip hop forum or not. The topic is hot producers, so any hot producers can be mentioned. Hip hop has reached beyond just hip hop. From R&B to Rock, they're all using styles started with hip hop.

To add to the list:
I like organized noise and Outkast for productions. There creativity is off the charts. They're always comin with some soulful, ecentric, head bangers.

I gotta put Ant Banks in here-Back in the early 90's I thought he was THE man for bangers. Mabey it was more just a phase I was going through, or the way his joints sounded on 4 15's in the trunk, I don't know but to me it was classic.

As far as the best producer, my vote has to go to Timberland. His genius is simply undenyable.

two that were forgotten

don't forget dj clue and swizz beats.not two of the best but close to the top.#1 i gotta give it to timbaland he has his own style and no one else can match or top it.piece
