What in your opinion is the best produced record you can think of. This is kind of a subjective question since some would say an album that sounds like it is very live is best, while others like that "over produced" sound.

Personally I think the best produced album is Orgy's "Vapor Transmission"(I know, corny name...)
It was produced by Josh Abraham who also does quite a bit in the way of actually recording with the band.

anyway, what do you all think,.

Poe's _Haunted_ is the best sounding record I've ever heard, in my opinion.

But you might not agree with me if you heard that, because I actually thought that Vapor Transmission sounded unusually bad. :(

best produced, I'd say something like Sgt. Peppers or Pet sounds. by today's standards, not the best sounding albums, but two of the best nonetheless.

Im definately a fan of over-production

Def Leppard- Hysteria... Mutt Lange
Bryan Adams-Waking up the Neighbours.... Mutt Lange
Treble Charger-Wide Awake Bored-Tom Lord-Alge and others
Sum 41 -Fat Lip----Tom Lord-Alge & Others

Anything by Fairbairn, Butch Vig and Mutt

On the other hand.... Stuff I dislike=
Anything by Steve Albini..... Anything By George Martin.....

I also hate any recording that requires only 24 tracks or less......
:)

Goldfrapp : Felt Mountain
Björk : Vespertine

badn that I find somewhat boring now but loved the production of the record.. it was their best as well.

smashing pumpkins - siamese dreams

Bleeding Gums: I can't agree with a George Martin record sounding bad, but Steve Albini? Definitely with you on that one.

Most of the prince albums are really well produced. You may not like prince, but you gotta admit that he is both a talented musician and composer/aranger/mixer/producer.

yeah,
To each there own I guess.....I just think what was going on on the west coast in LA was much better at the time...

Compare, The Doors "Touch Me" to "Strawberry fields"... and and I just think that Touch Me is just a much more solid production and fuller sounding...

But SF is a better SONG...

However Androgenous he may be.... *LOL*

He can play 26 instruments... and I don't mean just a few chords here and there.... He has mastered ALL of them.....

I believe that was Clearmountain.....?? OR maybe he just engineered ....IM not sure...

Clearmountain has a knack for Overproducing, but it still sounds raw and earthy... It's hard to find that line....Pretty cool!

I don't like that latest GooGoo Dolls Album....(with "slide" etc...) I mean it's ok, but the drums sound like demo quality....

One a different note.......Kravitz is ok ...but why does he copy Zep..... why not carve your own sound........

I have to admit, he has them Bonzo Drums Down Pat... I mean If Bonzo was still alive he would say... Hey those are my fucking drums!!!!!What the Bloody hell!!!....

Anyone agree or disagree???

Ohhh, Gotta go Dawson's Creek is on.........;)

Martin Birch did some fantastic work, particularly with Iron Maiden. His best was Black Sabbath's Mob Rules.

But Tool's Aenima is the best production I've ever heard.

I'll have to disagree on Kravitz' drummer sounding like Bonham.. nope.. don't hear it.. The only ones who could pull off John's sound in a blind hearing test would be Bonzo himself, his son, or Bruce Springsteen's drummer who somehow miraculously pulled an exact duplicate of "When the Levee Breaks" out of his kit when demonstrating rock styles on a pre-Kathy Regis show some 15+ years ago.

I'll second that opinion on Bonzo. "Achilles Last Stand" is just an amazing piece of work. Along with so many other songs... that guy had a right foot that must have been made of steel. I agree that Jason Bonham is very talented, though.

Heh. I'm not even a drummer, and I get a thrill out of the Bonham vs. Moon argument.

Zak Starkey is an incredible drummer. If any of you have the opportunity to see him, do so. I swear, if you squint, he turns into Keith Moon, for just a few seconds.

Kravitz

Hey Cyrokk,

sorry to correct you on this one, but Kravitz himself is Kravitz's drummer! And not a bad one, for sure.

David.

i've gotta throw mine in:

modern:
tortoise: standards & millions now living....
trans am: surrender to the night
radiohead: kid a & ok computer

not so modern, but timeless:
the beatles: sgt pepper's
pink floyd: dark side

i am also a fan of the production on some stuff by the police - very open and airy...
