You know Vikki, if your going to get a pair, you might as well get the "Matched" stereo pair. Too bad you didn't buy your MXL603S a few months ago... you could get a matched pair with shock mounts and a case for about $200 and now they have gone up $79 to $279. At least they didn't lose any resale value (yet).

The other thing is... if your going to pay $279, for just a little more ($319.99) you could get the Studio Projects C4's... it comes with interchangeable omni and cardioid capsules... plus the pad/filter switch can come in handy too.

http://www.8thstreet.com/product.asp?ProductCode=6679&Category=Microphones

And there is also the Behringer B5 for only $179.99 a pair... which also comes with the interchangeable omni and cardioid capsules and the pad/filter switch.

http://www.8thstreet.com/product.asp?ProductCode=21014&Category=Microphones

Note: the C4 package are a "Matched" pair and the B5 package are NOT matched mics... also the C4 package comes with windscreen, shock mounts, and a case... the B5 comes with only two cables, but it's also $140 cheaper.

Oh, and don't forget the JoeMeek JM27 for $160 a pair (NOT matched). Like the B5 is Behringer's answer to the Studio Projects C4... the JM27 is PMI's answer to the Marshall MXL-603S.

http://www.samedaymusic.com/prodsearch?form=prodsearch&q=JM27&submit.x=12&submit.y=11

Two JM27's... $160... (not matched)
Two B5's... $179.99... (not matched)
Two 603S... $279... (matched)
Two C4''s... $319.99... (matched)

EDIT: Price correction.
Also, here is a list of some of the mic factories in China...

FEILO factory… Shanghai, China

Marshall Electronics factory… Shanghai, China (disengaged from FEILO)

SE Electronics factory… Shanghai, China (disengaged from FEILO)

797 Audio… outside Beijing, China

SoundKing Audio Co., Ltd… Ningbo, China

Fengli… ?

If anyone would like to add to the above list... that would be great. :)

I was just having a ring around different companies in the uk.
I was told by a couple of companies that the new akg c451b was having some issues. So was not available at the moment. Couldn't seem to find any more info.
Another mic that reared its head was the Crown CM 700, anyone any info on this one?

Quote from "Same Day Music"...
This item cannot be returned. Microphones (all types), Harmonicas, Ear Plugs, In-Ear Monitors, Heil Talk Boxes, and any other items that touch your mouth, your nose, or your inner ear cannot be returned once opened due to health laws.

If the above quote were true, we wouldn't have public phones and etc.
That's a dirty trick to try and play - I'm sure the law would be on the side of the buyer, but some people might be fooled into thinking they can't take a broken purchase back!

I think the best way to deal with companies like "Same Day Music" is to boycott them.

If that's their policy then I would agree with you. I only buy from places where I have a good relationship with a member of staff. That way I can tell them straight what I want and they know I won't be BS'd to sell gear. I think I mentioned I was looking at electric pianos the other weekend - the sales guy says, "This one's quite cheap, but that action's not the best ... and to be honest the piano sounds aren't too convincing." The manager was stood behind him and proceeded to tell him off, but I happened to think that (ignoring the fact that I can when a piano feels more like a computer keyboard than a musical instrument) it was entirely appropriate with a customer he knew well and wanted to look after.

I spoke to some folks at Summer NAMM last weekend from SE Electronics. They've got some killer looking new mics using quality components that you should consider. They are distrubited through Sonic Distribution and have an office in the UK. Here's a number: +44 (0) 1525 840400.

I think TF Pro is distributing SE mics in the UK; not sure if they're the distributor but they are offering them on their website.

vikki, some excellent mics from your side of the pond are http://www.red5audio.com

See the RV10 and RV8 at

A bit off subject, but does anyone have any idea what these guys kick drum mic sounds like? I have heard rumours of it being pretty good, although it looks in design distinctively similar to some chinese mic's sold by Thomann.

Viki - as for your SD Condensor issues, check out a pair of ADK mic's. They are very similar in design to the MXL's (I wouldn't be suprised if they were built in the same factory) and share many components. I was looking at the guts of one and comparing it to a 603s and was suprised by how similar they were. As for sound, the ADK's I found were a little less brittle sounding, but only marginally. There is very little difference in them tbh.

I don't know... but, my guess is FIELO and 797 Audio are the two biggest and best Chinese mic factroies.

Those Red5 mics look interesting because they're very competitively priced. Alan says that the PMI/SP customer service extends to the UK. With my SE mic I got a warranty card that had to be posted to the States - I couldn't find anyone who was interested in me in the UK.

Does anyone know which factory makes the Red5 Audio mics?

According to the owner, he uses several factories. Why I do not know. Using more than one presents QC issues IMHO. I believe Takstar is one, and perhaps the primary one, but they seem to be very closed mouth about it. We all know he makes them overseas, but he may be using Mansion, Takstar, and Fielo. Those are my guesses.

Click Here Then scroll through the products. You will see several of the same mics that Red 5 offers. Does he make changes...only his hairdresser knows for sure...

If he wishes to post here, he can answer your questions better than I can.

In either case, the Red 5 mics are nice. I am biased, but then you would expect me to be... :)

"QC issues" ?
"Does he make changes" ?

PMI Audio slaps the competition again... lol.

C'mon DJ................both those comments are valid and uninflammatory and you ignored this comment............

"In either case, the Red 5 mics are nice"

Hey Harvey Gerst, are Alan's comments both valid and uninflammatory? What's the facts?

We don't need Harvey's opinion to know that you're trying to stir it up again. Leave it alone, already.
