The Gt44 looks a good deal. Its a bit more than i was looking to spend but is it worth spending that much more? Also is it worth spending more on the mike or the preamp?

The GT 44 is the best single mic I have ever found for guitar cabs. It is a very focused mic that takes EQ very well. In the mix it is right there and loses nothing like many other mics I have used. Different pre-amps bring out different qualities in this mic making it a wonderfuly flexable tool. It is best on high-dynamic sources like elec guitar cabs, snare drums, toms. Best used on a few sources as it starts to show its sonic footprint if you build up too many tracks. It is worth every penny. I don't know if it is still going for $199 at GC, but if it is, grab it immediately!

Hey acorec,

I have a GT33 that I'd like to try on my distorted amp. How do you set it up? Since it's a condenser, I would think and inch away from speaker (a la SM57) would be too harsh. Just curious how you mic your cabinet with the GT44.

I put it about 3" away from the best sounding speaker in the cab. Placement is critical with this mic. Keep playing around with placement until you find the sweet spot. It will take some time but will be well worth while.

heard that - and i've gotta say would recomend the gt 33 over that - people's opinions and just the spec's of the mic would lean me towards that - and the gt 33 is only £100 at digital village...so it's cheaper becuase everywhere seems to have huge reductions on the groove tubes mic's at the moment - but i haven't heard it so someone else might be more help....have a look a some threads on the se electronics mic's - mixed opinions...haven't heard much bad about any of the groove tubes.

The GT33 is the non-tube version, isn't it? Might sound totally different, I dunno.

I've no complaints with my SE2200, but I have not had proper time with better LDCs to try it against. Certainly it does not disgrace itself when put with the cheaper Rødes and various things in the range ... the new SE2200A is the same mic as the JoeMeek JM47 so see what you can find cheaper and which comes with a shockmount or whatever.

gd point - hadn't thought about the extra cost of the shockmount - thanks!

I am thinking a Studio Projects B1 or C1 plus a Vtb-1.

Then maybe an Sm57, beyer m60 or Sennheiser MD421 a later on. Ill need another preamp then.

Is it worth spending that much more for the C1?

Best?

I'd have to say Royer R121 and MD421 close up, and an AKG 414 BULS about 6' from the amp all running into UA 2108 preamps.

Rather pricey affair though. About 5k of gear right there.

i bought the gt 44 last week - comes with shockmount etc... - getting some killer tones....use it with a sm57 close miked and this a few feet back and the results are beautiful! but also just on it's own as a close mic it works nicely becuase of the 10db reduction switch on it.

How does the SENNHEISER MD421 II compare to the original md421?

The II's suck.

The II's remind me of an older, cut down smaller MD421 they used to have out a long time ago that failed. I forget the model name off hand. I think they are repackaging these as MD421's when in truth they aren't.

I don't know anything but the black one is what I recognise to be an MD421 ... the older one labelled as MD421-2 might be slightly different, I don't know. Certainly the newer one looks a safe buy. I'd have it myself if I had any dosh left! :)

Y'know ... dough, wad, why-do-I-have-so-little? Do they use any of those names in the Front End Audio office? :D
