i'm new to analog recording and i'd like to know what's the best (best 5?) mics to record live guitar...my band is just one guitar and drums and we record it live in one take...i'm looking for a vintage sound...kinda like hendrix, zeppelin and old jamaican sound like augustus pablo and old marley...not much distortion, alternating a crunchy bluesy sound and clean reggae/dub sound...
your help would be very helpfull...thanks alot...

You might try using the search function, or checking the FAQ at the top of the forum. It's been discussed about 10 million times on every internet forum every created. Just go to Search > "guitar" and "microphone" or even "best" and "microphone" and "guitar"

And the analog / digital thing doesn't really make much difference, btw. :D

hey...i tried and wasn't very happy...but thanks anyway...if someone can help that would be appreciated...

the vintage sound is the guitar, amp, pedals and player. an sm57 will record what sound goes into it

Some favorites around here, or just of mine, are:

Shure SM-57 (definitely is a "classic" sound, but I am not a fan) <$100
Sennheiser e609 (havent tried this yet) ~$100
Studio Projects B1 (my band used this on an Orange amp, nice sound) $100
Sennheiser 421 (good for a thick marshall sound) $200-300 used
Sennheiser 441 $300 and up used.

I am in a band where I play guitar with just a drummer, I have had good luck with a 441 on my cab. I'll probably try a 421 next time we get together. Bleed-through hasn't been much of an issue for me.

If you're not happy, then I know people who have had success with MAO inhibitors such as Prozac, Zoloft or Paxil.

But if you're looking for a guitar mic, I highly suggest you use the search function. I don't see where asking the question again is going to turn up any new and exciting revelations that haven't already been revealed on at least a weekly basis. :D

We should resolve to answer every repetitive mic question with:

The Green Bullet

Alright, I'm game. I like the bullet. It's shitty enough and looks cool. Bullet it is.

Get a goddang bullet and your guitar amp tracks will SINGGGG ! ! ! AHHHH

The Green Bullet was specially formulated with beginning analog recordist in mind. It has special "analog receptors" -- or something like that. I read that somewhere. :D

I'm pretty happy with my 609. Try blending the 609 with the 57.

It has two other important attributes: it's LARGE DIAPHRAGM and it has that holy grail of audio technologies--a TRANSFORMER.

Also, it's unnecessarily expensive!

If only it had a built-in tube, it'd be perfect!

Yea, solid-state sucks. At least it's got some iron in the path. :D Thank God for that.
