M147 Vs a 4060.. which mic would you get? and why.. i got offered a 460 for 899 used.. and a m147 for 1000...

Between the two I would prefer the 4060. If you're in no rush, keep your eye on e-bay. I got one there for $700.

A good pre will help you appreciate a lot of other mics too.

True, but even moreso with the SM-7. Not only is it the most demanding non-ribbon mic I've ever used in terms of the amount of gain it needs, but it's downright fussy about the preamp's impedence load. If it doesn't see enough, then it will get all "hissy" on you. :D

In my limited experience with some of the mics you mention, the AT 4060 and the Studio Projects T-3 are both outstanding, and listening to comparison recordings, I found the AT 4060 to be much better than the M-147.

Since no one else has mentioned this, in practice, a dynamic such as the Electro-Voice RE 20 (or RE 27, which is the same mic using neodymium magnets for 6db greater output) is a much "tougher" mic -- almost indestructible -- while the T-3 and the AT 4060 (and any other tube and/or condenser mic with a 6 micron or thinner diaphragm) will be much more fragile.

If you're in a studio setting where the mic is fixed on a boom (with or without a pop-stopping screen) and the singer never touches it (or blows into it to see if it's on), the condenser mics might give you a bit more detail and "air." However, anywhere you can't maintain that level of total control over the equipment, the sturdiness of a good dynamic is reassuring.

I sense that the "specialness" of a mic is important to you. I "had" to own the AT 4060, if only for a few months, since it was one of the best mics I had ever heard. It was very special. In the end, however, I replaced it with the Studio Projects T-3, and I hear the same magic with the T-3.

Best wishes,

Mark H.

ok i'm gonna wait a month or 2 and get either the T3,4060, or m147.. they are all good brands and all will yeild great quality. i need to do a head to head comparison

In my opinion: Hands down, far above the rest, (at least the rest that I have) is the Shure SM7.
Its hard to refute the success of this mic in that application. It was used for the vocals on the biggest selling album of all time.

Correction, The Eagles used u87s, Peter frampton used sm57s, and Fleetwood mac used Sennhieser 421s, Led Zeppelin used SM57s, And for the fifth best selling alblem of all time Micheal Jackson used a SM7.

Alot has happened since CD have come along, and frankly thriller hasnt did much of a dent since.
