I recorded my college bands promotional demo using a Shure SM57, a Samson bass drum mic, and the no name dynamic mentioned above. That initial demo was good enough to get us steady gigs and pass out promotionally. The SM57 was used on snare, all guitars including acoustic, and all vocals. Granted that was 10+ years ago and there wasn't a plethora of affordable options like today. I'll try to get a clip up tonight.
 
In that price range CAD M177 is working great on overheads for me.
SP B1 is a great mic if you're looking for a condenser.
Dynamic, I'll take a Heil PR20 over a sm57 or sm58 for $150. Better mic IMHO
 
In the price range ($150), the CAD M179 and GXL3000 mics are available.

i was wondering if anyone knew what quality my mic is?

the name of the microphone is:
mipro mr-801 true diversity wireless microphone system

i use i to record vocals but normally i woulden't use wireless but i
borrowed it from a friend and he and the second member of my group
had an argument so no its mine and free:P but he said it was expensive?
have anyone heard about this trademark?
 
oh yeah i almost forgot does anyone know how to record vocals and make them a bit
more into the song. i ussually doubble the voice and that works quite good but not allways the vocals are as easy to get perfect twice

I didn't see "it all depends on situation/location/recording source/signal chain" as an option, so I didn't vote.

Seriously, without context, this poll is like comparing apples to oranges. As it stands it's basically just a meaningless list.
 
It's not on the list, but I use an EV767 super cardioid diaphragm mic. It's super awesome for female live and studio vocals. I also have the standby of an SM58.
 
Ya its depends on the source and situation. The 2020 is great as are the mxl 603's I would also stretch for a kel audio hm 2d and the cad m 179 is sweet!

And the 2020 sounds quite similar (in frequency response characteristics) to a 4050, but with small diaphram effects (faster, less warm, better for acoustic guitar (barely)) rather than large diaphram effects (slower transients, warmer, better for voices (barely)). that's how I hear them anyway when I use them, we're all different though. I don't use 4040s often enough to comment.

They are all the same

Price reflects quality (a bit) and these are similar prices so will get similar quality...Pay $1000 more and you will get a little increase in quality..

You didn't include ADK they make some really nice cheap mics I bought a ADK A-1 for £100 and it is nice they make cheaper ones too... Looking at a Studio Projects B1 because of the amazing reviews! Otherwise check out T.bone series at Thomann!!! Cool
 
The C1 when it came out had some good potential...but they eventually made changes and the ones with the switches and the jack in the center of the bottom of the mic arent near as good sounding.

The B1 that Ive heard wasnt as nice as the ones Im sure most might have heard...so I passed on it.
 
Best I've heard around $150 was a used Kel HM2D until I picked up an old Oktava 219 for $70 and had my friend mod it as described in Scott Dorsey's article in Recording Mag. That one's now in another league

THE BEST MICROPHONE UNDER $150

Take one Benjamin Franklin and one Grant, fold them up and tape them to the top of a Neumann M49.
