I have a Shure SM-58. I use it only for vocals. Right now I got it hanging from a planters hook in the ceiling. But I don't know if thats the best place for it. I obviously don't own a mic stand and that is definitely in my future purchases but for right now I'm just looking for the most ideal place for optimal recording. Should I just go back to holding it while recording vocals? Any help is most definitely appreciated.

I accidentally locked this thread a few minutes ago. I shouldn't be able to do that, should I? Eh, forgive the newbie like comments but I am what I am.

The SM58 is a directional mic, and for best results should be pointed at the source. Most people don't sing at their best while lying flat on the floor looking up at the ceiling! :D

Even a cheapo stand should be an improvement. Do yourself a favor and spring for $20. Doesn't even sound like you need a boom stand. Plus this will allow you do use a pop filter if necessary.

There is one advantage to the ceiling method: you pretty much eliminate any transmitted rumble that you might get through the floor into the mic stand.

Like little dog suggests, those mics require you to be singing AT them... maybe set it ontop of a high surface (like a dresser) propped up so it's angled toward you... I had this problem as a student years ago, but there's no substitute for a mic stand ;) .

Also, holding the mic only cause low-end background issues... this can be filtered out with EQ'ing, but it's never 100%.

Thank you both for your sagacity. I have since taken the mic down from the ceiling and am resigning to holding it till I can acquire a mic stand. This happened of course after I couldnt find a comfy pillow for floor vocals. =)

thanks
