I also have the Envoice, and I have to agree that it's the best mic pre under a grand. ;)

Meek VC6Q?
It's a nice unit, but the Envoice is alot more versatile for the money.

An old, wise man once said....

"Spend your money once."

The Envoice is that "once."

Have any of you compared the JoeMeek VC6Q to the more expensive JoeMeek stuff - like the VC1Q. I got a great deal on the VC6Q on Ebay and I like it, but it's not as "magical" as I'd hoped. Are the upper end JoeMeek pieces a significant step up?

I have a JOEMEEk VC1Q and so far am very pleased with the results. I also use a few tube pre amps but for most my tracking latley I've used the Meek. People say that the meek stuff is used for a more radical sound. But I have been able to get very natural sound from the meek.
Take a listen to a song I finished called "Leaving" I used the Joemeek for the whole tune. Snare, vocals, guitars and bass.

I have a couple of HHB Radius 40s and have been quite pleased with them. I think I paid around $650 each, which is a bit more than your $ range, but each has a compressor and an equalizer as well as a pre-amp.

The Presonus MP-20 is also pretty good (~$450), but doesn't use valves (tubes) - it uses Jensen transformers, although the newer ones have transformers from a different source, and there's some question about how they sound compared to the earlier ones. I remember reading an article about how to retro-fit tranformers of the original type, which looked to be fairly straightforward (if you have skills with a soldering-iron), but I haven't bothered changing mine. The MP-20 has two channels, so that would fit in even better with your budget, but bear in mind the MP-20 is just a pre-amp, i.e. it doesn't have any equalizer or compressor.

As they say, "you pays yer money... you takes yer choice..."

Hope this helps -

richard -

great tune - VERY nice vox & gtr. sounds. Have you ever used the VC6Q? I just got one and it's not as much better than my Focurite ToneFactory as I thought it would be.

aphex 107?

Since some learned members like c7sus have posted on this thread, I was curious how you guys rate the Aphex 107's
sound quality? They go for $200 or under now (I own one).

Telefunken Richard First of all I like your style! Nice stuff.

The Joe meek stuff sounds warm and sshimmery to me. That's what I hear ....and that's not a bad thing.
The Envoice is more transparent is all. Warm but real room. I actually heard my room for the first time when I bought it a few years ago.
Each has their own sound and thats the way it should be in my opinion. The Meek sure gets along with your tune. Congrats.
