what is the best mic out there for under 200, for a hip hop artist.

idk if it would be suited well for hip hop, but i have an at 4040 that i love. retail is 200.

This question has been asked 1,000,001 times... I would suggest taking a little time and reading the board....ofcourse you will probably get 10,000,001 answers...

Fuckin shit... i mean damn i know its annoying but it aint like these people know the question has already been asked... hes only posted twice...

hip hop, go with the AT4040... really you should save a little more money and get something a bit better like a KSM32 or AT4047... i've even heard before that the ADK Vienna and SE Electronics SE2200A mics are good for hip hop, but ive never heard them... if i were you i'd just get something decent but cheap, like an MXL V63M ($99), and record with that while you save for something better... i do rap too and im saving for the KSM44... they great for rap vocals...

EDIT: Look around on Ebay or something for a used mic... you might be able to get like a great $400 mic for $200 if its used...

Job + $10/hr = $1600/month
__________
FICA - $350
Rent - $600
Bills - $150
Food - $200
Bling - $100
__________
What's left = $200

The newb section...it's a veritable gold mine for stuff like this.

I bet it has to do with advertising. Musiciansfriend, etc, seem to focus on this as the "magic" dollar amount in their catalogs...

I don't even make $10 an hour. My pay sucks right now.

I only make $6.25. I am 20 years old and i graduated from high school and did about 1 year of college. I wish i had a job so i could buy "high end" gear but i have to stick to the $200 dollar system too.

What do you do - where do you live?

Well why the hell didn't you speak up earlier?!? We could have avoided about 1000 threads of discussion on this issue.
It's so nice to finally have this issue put to bed. How do I get dragon to put up a sticky so that we can just defer them to this indisputable truth?

Hmmmm

This is the first time I've seen everyone bitch like hell at one of the newbs asking which mic to buy. Hey! Every time I come to this board all I get is post after post asking

"What should I buy? Product 'a' or Product 'b?'"

Why doesn't this board just do like Harmony-Central and just start a rating area?

I'd just get a Marshall MXL V67 something or other. Better yet, get a pair.

Another option would be to buy a Studio Projects B1 ($100) and put the rest of your hard-earned money toward a future purchase. A quality mic pre, possibly?

The B1's noted for its flat response with a variety of sources and is certainly one of the most popular, cheap, workhorse mics at this forum. I'm a big supporter of this mic because it gives me back what I put in front of it, with little coloration. If I want a different sound, I move the mic around or move the musician across the room. I really don't think you'll do much better under $200 unless you opt for a used mic of significantly higher quality. Then again, I'm not a full-time pro, and mic opinions are notoriously biased. Trust nobody.
