I want to record my 2 yr old daughter's voice. All I have is an old SM58 and it doesn't come close to picking up all the delicate, airy, breathy nuances of her voice - very subtle stuff.

Any suggestions on a type of mic?

I've been wanting to try my hand at a well known modification of the standard 6mm Panasonic electret mic capsule. It's supposed to give outstanding results. Does a small diaphragm condenser sound like the right ticket?

use a small diaphragm condensor for better high end. You may want to use a omni so you dont have to worry about proximity effect.

Honestly, the $35 Behringer ECM8000s that many, many of us have purchased, could be ideal, as long as you didn't need to conceal it. Likewise, I've had great luck with a Crown PZM 6D, a tiny plate microphone that picks up signals very clearly, even at a distance. Note that both require phantom power.

Best wishes,

I once recorded a bit of my son's (1.5 years old) voice with a Rode NT3 and it came out great....(they work well as drum overheads, too!)

kept the 'windscreen' on to eliminate the drool effect...

I don't have the money right now for a decent preamp, so I think I'm going to try the electret mod flush mounted in a heavy baffle ala PZM. The Panasonic capsule has a pretty high output (I bought 10 of them last year to play around with for $22). This in combination with the 6dB boost from flush mounting will, I hope, help me get away with using only a small amount of gain on my soundcard mic input.

I'll let you all know how it goes.

Thanks!
