I use the Waves L2 and like it a lot, but someone mentioned on one of these threads that their UA Precision Limiter is making the L2 jealous... I checked out the UA webpage and was intrigued by the cheap price of their plug ins and their appearance, however I have never heard these so i was wondering what people could say about their products.

If you're speaking about limiters in general, yes, you'll probably dump your L-Series stuff after trying the UAD Precision Limiter.

I have hated them (L-Series) for years. Not as much as Fletcher, but close.

Wow, "hated" is pretty strong... I've been "less than impressed" with them for years.

Not that I'm crazy about any limiter when it's being used for the purpose of increasing sheer volume, but the UAD-PL handles it with much more style than most.

Along with that, the UAD are (IMHO) the ultimate plug collection available currently. A great mix of flavor and usefulness. And yeah, you can't argue much with the price. I've said many times that the Pultec plug alone (and without controls) is worth the price of the entire collection all by itself.

Figure, if John's cool with it...it probably the bomb.

Yeah L2 can fek up a song something bad. I get a tremelo sound usually that sounds like distortion which aint very nice. Is the L2 JUST a limiter? Has it not got any fancy other stuff in it? Is peak master any good?

There's nothing wong with the L2 if you use it correctly, it's used in every major mastering studio that I know of.

For example:

The problem comes in when you use it too aggressively. It should not be used in place of compression but in addition to it. The idea is to remove stray peaks (if you feel that it needs it) to achieve additional level. Not to use it to squash a mix into a pancake for the sake of volume.

I rarely set the threshold more than -2 or -3 dBFS.

Is it possible to use something like the UAD and regular DX plug-ins within the same project? Also is the UAD compatible with windows 98SE? I always was interesteed in the UAD card, and would consider it as long as I don't have to upgrade my system.

If I had to master a record with only one tool, it would be an EQ. So much emphasis is put on compression and limiting. You really can't go wrong with the UAD. You can use it with DX plugins, no problem. Check the UA site for info about windows 98se. I don't know for sure.
