What is your opinion on the best hiphop/rap producer of all time? I say Dr. Dre.

First Place Tie in my book with the nods going to:

1. "...Marley Marl is one helluva man..."
- Roxanne Shante -

1. Paul C. aka Paul McKasty (God Bless The Dead)

<if I HAD to choose one, i'd go Paul C. First, then m-m-m-m-m-Marley...>

For the early to mid 80's I'd say Ced-Gee, from the Ultramagnetic MC's.

Ced Gee was ill as fuck, but cats today *still* can't fuck with how Paul C. was making beats & twisting sounds to make what he needed and shit like that. That motherfucker is STILL ahead of the game, & he's been dead for almost 2 decades.

I still gotta say Paul C. For President (of all time)...
<He's the reason cats like me keep cassette decks handy>

I agree, Paul C. was ILL AS F*CK!

The samples he flipped.

The sounds he manipulated.

His sequencing and mixing.

AND

The "stabs" he used.

;)

that's not a fair question too much influences...

for now i say DJ PREMIER

Sure its influence. I'm from Australia so i don't get the wide spectrum of American Hiphop that u guys get. That is why i say Dr. Dre because he is one of the more widely known rap producers.

I doubt anyone here has ever heard any aussie hiphop? Its full underground. I don't expect to make it big with my oz beats in the next 5-10 years.

I'm a Premo man myself

my vote would also have to go with my man premo...matter of fact my first hip hop joint that i got my hands on was "gangstarr"
daily operation..the next was eazy e easy does it...so dre would be neck and neck with premo for me ..but overall premo is a god...
Peace

Peace Love Respect,

Ya Boy Kevlar

...

DJ Krush
the foremost best producer of the last 2 decades

only 2 people in my existence i consider a "genius"

Leonardo Da Vinci, and DJ Krush

Paul C and ced g are good choices. I am partial to RZA and prince paul myself, with a little nod going to the bombsquad.

I thought about RZA, and the bombsquad, too, but the first cat I heard freaking the "wall of sound technique" (though not to the degree of hank shocklee) was still Paul C. I think dude was an amazing producer/engineer. Besides, cBas, that's not fair, you dropped a trio for your all-time favorite!!!!!

The bombsquad & Paul C... oh man, time to dig out some wax. I feel a very old school mix coming on...

which rakim tracks did paul c produce, and which ones did large professor produce? Ive always wanted to know that.

actually, can anyone do a production discography of mark the 45 king, marley marl, paul c and large professor?

TIMBALAND OFCOURSE! I can't think of anyone else who brought something new to the game, so new and fresh that other people started copyin his beats

I'd have to say Davonte Swing because without him, there would be no Timbaland or Missy. He showed Missy production from point A to point B; then Missy put Tim on the production tip. Davonte also holds credits for most of Tupac's commercially released hits such as "I Get Around", "I Came To Bring The Pain", "How Do You Want It", and more. He also did a lot of Jodeci's stuff, and was a group member. His credits go on and on.

Also the duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis was some bad muthafuckaz. They were responsible for hits ranging from Janet Jackson to Prince. These brothers also brought Teddy Riley's production to the next step towards the late 80's and early 90's. The Neptunes were protege's of Teddy Riley... time to start giving credit where credit is due. 1ne

Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis are mos def 2 of my favorite producers, but neither them, nor Davonte make hip-hop (not for a living, at least). The joints Davonte did for Tupac were R&B at best with Pac spittin over them tracks, save "I Get Around," but hell he jacked all the loops/identifiable motifs for that from other hip-hop jawns himself. I won't argue about Timbaland & Neptune beats, well I guess they count(???), but best of all time?

Teddy Riley & hip-hop, I don't see it & never have.

I can give all them cats all type of credit for what they did/do, but it ain't hip-hop, even on the debate tip, except for Timbo & Neptunes.

I know a lot of what people say will be based on their age & exposure to shit, so I can't knock the next cat or kitten's opinion for the most part, but as I see it, you're on about R&B producers more than beatmakers. I've heard your jawns, so I know you know the difference. Maybe you just read the first post wrong. Or, maybe I got it twisted. You tell me.

cBas,

I'ma get that discography info up here soon. I gotta dig in the crates a little.

Timbaland or Missy would have made it w/out Devante. Devante hardly did anything for them. They have to come out by they own cuz Devante wanted all fame to himself...did u see Missy Elliot Vh1 Behind The Music? :o Yeah Devante started her out..but as hungry for the business as she is, I'm sure if he wasn't there..that she would've learned on her own eventually.

gotta go with..

To me, Premo is the best. He has a touch with how drums should sound and when.

other cats i like: Jay Dee, Hi-tek, Madlib, Akenathon...
