best headphones to mix with

Sounds like the question should be "what headphones are comfortable enough for my wife to wear while she sleeps?" She can listen to whatever the hell ambient crap she wants - pigeons cooing, distant thunder, dolphins farting, "Window Fans Vol. IV" - and drown you out, so that you can do what you need to do.

Hmmm....homeless, over $1000 a month in child support and loss of influence over my kids......no thanks!

I realise that dood... only joking ;)

FWIW, I use Beyer Dynamic DT250's and they sound fine to me. You may need to go for something a little more reassuringly expensive though... it really depends... mine only cost £80 and you can spend double that for some makes. I went for Beyer Dynamic headphones mainly based on the fact that the BBC used to use them a lot... but I realise now that it isn't that much of a recommendation.

It's a pitty you can't find a place that will let you try a couple of different makes on a sale or return basis.

AKG 240DF (DF stands for Difuse Field). They can't overcome physics, but they do a pretty good job of trying. The only cans for the job, IMHO. Oh, and get your wife some Pamprin. Un-plugged electric too loud? There's gotta be PMS involved with that.

Well don't put the fan blowing on her, I actually sleep with one on and point it away from me. I also have a thunderstorm cd going most of the night. Just slowly sneek in more and more white noise until its like a freight train in the bedroom. Then you can have an all out band practice while she sleeps.

Man, that was fucking hilarious!

I had a similar problem with an ex wife. I managed to extricate myself from the situation and I survived! I even got custody of the kids. Rock n'Roll! :D

As I live in close proximity to neighbors and have young kids, I empathize with your situation.

I know it's evil, but I have mixed many times on headphones out of sheer necessity. I've found the AKG 240 series headphones to be the most "monitor-like"... pretty flat. I've found the Sony 7506s to be good also, although they sound more like a home stereo, they have a bit of a bottom and top end boost. But both will work in a pinch. And no, they are no substitute for decent volume on monitors. Some things will get skewed. You'll probably mix things that are dead center too loud, and good luck getting the bass right. But still, it's been done before and if it's your only option, no sense in giving up because of the "prevailing wisdom."

Okay... we have got to get a required sticky page that all new members must read before posting or reading other posts. Each thread on the sticky page should have a minimum time requirement based on the length of the post. I don't mind in the least to help people, answer questions about anything, etc. but when it's the same questions every other day, it gets frustrating.

What are the best headphones for mixing?
What mic is the best for (rock, rap, etc.)?
I've got $xxx dollars, what should I buy?
How do you record? Mix? Master?
Which member of the administration gets caught next? :D

You know, those questions.
