what are the best headphones to mix or master with that can give me almost the same type of accuracy that monitors give you. Cause where i live i can't use loud speakers cause i can get kicked out lol :D

dood... there've been some very recent topics on this very subject and I'm surprised you missed them to be honest...

I've mixed on headphones for years using the same excuse as you... can't play my music loud... but I've since come to learn that it a poor excuse. Even with monitors, you should mix on low volume and only crank it up every now and then just to see (hear) what it's like loud (and there must be odd occasions when you can do that.

Now I just use headphones when I need to closely check details of sounds and check out strereo detail or to hear small artifacts that I may hav missed with my monitors.

Get headphones by all means but also get some half decent monitors too if you can afford them...

cheers

I'm in the same boat. I can only track/mix late at night. If I have to have two closed doors between my wife and I because an unamplified electric guitar is keeping her awake, how in the seven planes of hell am i suppossed to use monitors?

There's a big difference between tracking and mixing. You're talking about tracking. Headphones are fine for that. We're talking about MIXING. Headphones are not so good for that.

No, I was refering to tracking AND mixing. Read my post you quoted again.

It doesn't really matter what you said, headphones are ok for tracking and NOT for mixing. If you really want a good mix get monitors and a high powered fan for your wife, put the fan in the room and it'll create enough noise to drown out the monitors.

No, the argument about the amplified guitars being too loud is about tracking.

A fan, eh? You mean something like that 20 inch box fan she has blowing directly on her all night? Yeah, that doesn't work.

The mention of UN-amplified guitars(read my post again), yes UN-amplified electric guitars, was to get the point across that I cannot make any noise while I track and/or mix. BTW, I was working out a guitar solo when she complained about the UN-amplified electric guitar being too loud. I wasn't tracking.

Oh. I thought you meant you were using a POD or something

Well don't put the fan blowing on her, I actually sleep with one on and point it away from me. I also have a thunderstorm cd going most of the night. Just slowly sneek in more and more white noise until its like a freight train in the bedroom. Then you can have an all out band practice while she sleeps.

If your wife is complaining about un-amplified guitar, what the heck difference are headphones gonna make anyways?

Well, if you gotta use headphones for mixing as opposed to tracking, then you gotta. Best of luck with that.

For the original poster: I like my AKG 240 headphones a lot, very clear and I assume accurate. I do final mixes with monitors but I do all my editing with the phones. I do complex music that needs lots of editing: I can get general balances with the phones. I automate everything so I can work out rough estimations with my phones and then fine tune the mix with my monitors. If you cant use monitors you might give the 240s a try.

Hmmm....homeless, over $1000 a month in child support and loss of influence over my kids......no thanks!
I'll just stare longingly at my pair of Fostex 0.5 monitors and dream about how cool it would be to actually get to use them in a properly treated room. I've been able to get my mixes to translate fairly well by using a pair of Nady Q560 cans that I got when I bought my Fostex VF160 and 0.5 monitors from Musicians Friend two years ago. I'm still interested in some phones that can give a better flat response.

Well the problem is there really isn't a pair that I've heard of that are flat enough to mix on. Headphones always sound better, couldn't really specifically tell you why but that's just the way it is. Also ear fatigue and permanent damage can all occur using headphones on a regular basis.
