I am looking for the best drum program VST or DXI. I'm not looking for looping. I want to create realistic drum tracks for entire songs that don't take me hours to program.

I'm throwing price to the wind and am just looking for the absolute best.

Any Ideas?

What's the best dog? What's the best color?? What's the best music??? What's the best car????

Same answer to these questions as well as yours........... IT DEPENDS.....

Well I don't know if it's the best.....But I've used Steinberg's Groove agent for several songs. Run's as VST and very easy to use/modify..

Sorry, couldn't help LMAO :D

No, but knowing Microsoft, I'm sure it's on its way! :D

Version 1.0 will blue-screen on you...

How about helping the guy out with his question, instead of playing Mr. Literal 101...

:D

I'd like to know what the "better" drum plugins are too. Or, what is pure trash, so I can avoid it.

I have Sonar 2.2 XL.

Well, basically what you need is a sampler, such as VSampler, Kontakt, etc, etc. What is so cool about DR-008 is that it's a sampler created for drums specially. There's others around, but I can't seem to remember what their names is...

I recently started using DR008 with Drumkit from Hell samples, and I must say, it provides me with about a billion times more flexibility than I ever had before. Having those velocity layered samples is AWESOME!. It allows for realism I couldn't come close to before, tapping away on my old drum machine. That being said, jakpetrov said he didn't want to spend hours programming, and programming is all I've done since getting set up this way. I can't stop tweaking my drums! Between piano roll, dr008, and a good set of velocity layered samples, I can't think of a more powerful drum editing solution. Except for a real drummer that is.
DR008 rocks.

I use the Drumkit from Hell samples as well. The samples are awesome and far better quality than I could get in my small home studio.

As far as Programs go, I use Fruity Loops. The program is VERY simple to use and does everything I need it to. I record mainly rock music. So the drums need to sound real. Fruity Loops makes it easy to make subtle changes to a beat just like a real drummer does. Possibilities are endless.

Good Luck.

Yeah, I use the Drumkit from Hell and sampler called Battery. Waaaaaaaaay better than a drum machine, trust me.

I've always used LiveSynth DXI with the Blue Jay Drums soundfonts from Sonic Implants. I program the drums parts right in Sonar.
The first thing almost everybody says when I play them my songs is "Dang... those sound like real drums. That is amazing!"

I wish it was "Dude... you are an amazing songwriter/ guitarist!" :(

I'm confused....

I followed the link and checked out the DR008. How exactly does it work? Do you assign a .wav file to each of the pads and then actually do the sequencing in Sonar? And if that's the case, then what's the difference between DR008 and the Cyclone DXI that comes w/ Sonar?

I'm not a huge DXI user, as I'm not into synths and synth programming. I use them for drums almost exclusively, and occaisonally an acoustic bass. I definitely don't want to spend my time programming sounds and velocity splits, etc, etc. I just want a program that's easy to learn and has lots of great kits with velocity splits and all that already done for me. Is DR008 such a program?

I need a little education.

That's right. You assign a sample to as many drum pads as you want and write a MIDI sequence in Sonar. As someone else pointed out, DR-008 is a sampler, so intrinsically it functions like other samplers out there. It plays your samples, which in this case are WAV files. However, as DR-008 was specifically made for drum samples, it has some extra features that are useful, like the velocity layered samples (i.e. you trigger one sample with MIDI notes at a given velocity, another sample with a note at a different velocity). This adds for realism.
However, you still have to program the drums yourself. If you don't know anything about drumming (as I did not until recently) this can be hard. You can look at other people's MIDI files to get ideas, or you can use something like that app that comes with Sonar--I think it is called SlicyDrummer--to generate the MIDI.
The main computer based alternative to using a drum sampler with a MIDI sequence, or recording a live drummer, is to use pre-recorded drum loops and connect them together--that's the Groove Clips function in Sonar. I don't do this myself. Some people swear by it. I think the main problem is finding the right loop that fits your music.

Programming each hit manually is really the only way to get the most realistic drums sounds and the flexibility to sequence the drums exactly how you want them for your particular song. Loops sound like ass!

Depends on your definition of "manually"... ;)

I play my drums "live" with my keyboard, and then do a little tweaking in the Piano Roll...

DR-008 is rocking good. I do as moskus does and tap out the beat for a measure on my keyboard then copy/paste to fill in for that part, then go back, play the whole song and add additional snare or kicks to mix it up a bit. When I am done I select all and groove quantize the whole thing to 'humanize' the sound...

I am not sure I would ever use this for finished product, but for composition, it has served me well.

At this site the song Stuck in Moline uses the DR-008 drums programmed as described above.

When you say 'piano roll' you mean 'drum map' correct?

What I am getting at is that you ARE converting over to a drum map correct?

Yes. But you still open the Piano Roll... ;)

I use this lovely Drum Map for the Drumkit From Hell that kGirl made for me. She's just lovely! :)
