best distortion pedal for recording

What does everyone think the best distortion pedal is for recording hard rock/metal guitar tones? just wondering
 
I'm not sure. My band doesn't play metal but for the heavily distorted stuff I use a Marshall Guv'Nor or a Boss DS-2. If you use EQ and mic your amp effectively you can get a really heavy sound with either of those.
 
use the od or distortion that comes in your amp. unless u have something terrible. then i cant help u
 
There isn't one - it depends entriely on the sound you want.
I've recorded with a horrible £20 pedal becuase it was a cheap and nasty sound that I wanted.
I've also recorded with a tube amp up full running into ripped speakers that were slightly too much for it.

Not sure what level of experience you have with guitars and gear. By 'pedal' do you also mean stomp boxes and floor processors or just stand alone pedals such as a Boss Distortion or Overdrive?
Generally a good amp will have a better distortion than any pedal (unless you add overdrive to the amps distortion). Also is this distortion for rhythm or lead or both if possible? .... and what type of style music (makes a huge difference!).
 
Well I have a kustom quad 100 head which has fair distortion but not quite heavy enough for me. I record hard rock/metal type stuff. It would be for rythm guitar mostly, micing the amp not DI, and Im talking about stand alone pedals. Thanks for the help so far.
 
I use the MXR Dime Distortion through my Fender Dynatouch Stage 1000, gain at about half on amp and pedal highs and lows cranked and mids almost all the way down. Decent little crunch imo
 
Remember though, the sound that you want (high gain I'm guessing) is not always going to record that great. WHilst recording today I tried this and you can really tell the differance. What are you recording with?
 
I spend all kinds of coin on tubes and such tweaking my 120watt tube head and getting the right tone. Then while recording I tracked one song with a $25 DOD grunge pedal and it blew everyone's minds. They want me to do the whole project like that. :D

I use the same pedal, and man, even if the man they made it for thought it sucked (cobain) and threw it in the crowd, it's good enough for me.
