A $100 dynamic will outperform a $100 condenser.

Sure about that?

Any $100 dynamic?

Any $100 condenser?

For any purpose?

this is ridiculous. the guy asked a question and everyone attacked him. how did you all learn? everyones new at some point.

if i were you,, i'd get a 58. you can't go wrong for vocals with a 58. you arent going to get decent vocals with a cheap condensor under 300 or so. so theres my vote.

I extended some options here. Figured I'd stray away from the always certain 5.
Just from reading other posts, my bets are on the AT3035.

I don't fucking believe the title of this thread...

"Vocal"

Nice blanket generalization! Two thumbs WAY up!! ;)

Now back to my question about the "Best" shoes.
Someone told me that I should get a pair of Adidas Running shoes - because you can't get a decent pair of basketball shoes for under $150.

I need to be able to wear this with a tux as well, and to go spelunking with my unicorn.

What do you think?

where do you get this rage from? even if he does like rap, who cares. i dont lke rap either, but he asked about a vocal mic not about a style of music. compared to most other "rappers", he seems rather intelligent.

Excellent

You think I have "Rage"???? :D :D :D :D :D :D

That was one of the few times I have actually Laughed Out Loud!!

Little man - you get rep for that! :)

Now to address the much more serious "rap" allegation.
Who said anything about rap????? (Besides you I mean.....)

Re-read the thread. My sig may allude to an exciting alter ego that is engaged in daring verbal battles over the validity of rap as an art - but in this case - it's just not true. I make stupid comments because I think anybody asking for the "best" of anything is wicked silly. Especially in such a subjective field as microphones - without even telling us what it's for. Thus the increasingly ridiculous "shoe" analogy.
I certainly have nothing against rap (at least not in this thread), and that's why I haven't brought it up (yet). Homeboy even said he had nothing to do with hip-hop.
No - my "rage :D " is not directed at any style of music. I make fun of him because he fills my inbox with nude pictures of him and his mom in compromising positions.

Besides - my xenophobia is primarily targeted towards homosexual beasts of myth and lore.

Do you hate black people little man?

No, not everyone attacked him.
And I've heard some excellent vocals with $300 and less mics.

And I have no rage....except Rage Against The Machine.

velvetcrush,
1stly - they are a VERY cool band - Teenage Symphonies to God etc.
Mate, I don't own ANY expensive mics. I have a Shure 57 which I loath. I have a bundle of cheap/2nd hand/found/etc mics that all serve a purpose & can do certain things.
My fav is a SONY ELECTRET 19B CONDENSER I also have a La Grange Dynamic I bought back in late 89 that's is GREAT - MANY pro & semi pro musicians have used it when I've run a PA or similar & have made very positive comments about it - a couple offered to buy it from me. Not a decent brand but an example of something that plays above its weight AND does a good job when used properly.
I don't have the money or half arsed hubris to be a mic snob.

Come now, What kind of a statement is that? I've cut some good tracks with a AT-3035 that took little if any eq during mixing.

F.S.

To Offended People

I guess we're arguing after semantics, and being fairly rude about it. I offer my humble apology and also my solemn promise that I will continue to jest with people that unknowingly ask a really really difficult question of a complete stranger.

I've never heard a song and been impressed by the sound of a mic. It's the sounds I capture with a mic that are of interest to me. Any mic will work for something, the challenge is learning where those relationships are. And it depends on a room and an instrument and a voice way too much for anyone here to be able to make a good selection for you. Really, it does.

I can reccomend a mic that doesn't sound harsh on cymbals. I can steer you away from a mic that doesn't reproduce vocals too well. I can't tell you what mic is going to be magic for you. I recorded albums in professional studios and tried mic after mic after mic that I couldn't afford then and still can't today. Years later, I found out my magic mic is a fuckin' $400 dynamic.
Am I glad I didn't buy a U87? HELLS YES I AM GLAD.

We're trying to give good advice, and trying to have fun doing it.

Lighten the fuck up, or alternatively, ask better questions.
