we already have the bass combo thread goin, what about the best bass stack on a budget going? good enough for playing shows.

On a budget I'd have to say hartke (again). Hartke really is good stuff, and it's very reasonably priced.

Buying a bass stack on a budget is a waste of money, and not to mention an inconvinience to lug around for small-medium shows. A good bass combo is more mobile and has the power to handle medium shows with ease.

A lot of us bass players mix and match, picking up heads and cabs here and there.

Other than combos, I can go with my SWR Workingman 4004 head, purchased for around $200 on eBay, with either an Avatar B112 Neo ($240 new) or a Flite 2-12 cab with JBL E140s. Or an old Peavey cabinet with a single 15, or, for tiny venues, a SWR Workingman 1-10 cab.

My point is that you don't have to spend a lot of money if you're patient and know what you're doing.

I had no problem with moving my Ampeg 8x10 to gigs in my last couple bands, not matter how big or small. Before that it was Ampeg 4x10 and 1x15 cabs, but I sold the 4x10 (for $300) to buy the 8x10 (for $500).

I have a mid 80's SVT with twin 4X10's. It sounds really good with my Alembic 5 string, but damn, it's a back breaker. I bought myself a little Ashdown 300W solid state 2X10 combo that I use for most gigs.

I got the SVT really cheap, but it was under special circumstances. No, it's not hot. ;^)

so what do you guys reccomend i should be looking for on ebay?

I like amps and speakers which reproduce what my instruments sound like. The SWR seems to do this very well, and with 400 watts, it's plenty of power *for me*.

Peavey makes good stuff. No intent to offend, but If you can't make the MK IV sound good, why would you be able to "make" anything sound good? (garbage in, garbage out).

Depends on what you called on a budget. I f you search around on ebay and maybe talkbass.com you could find a used SWR 350 bass amp head, (try looking for the chrome version), for about 350$, I used to have one, it rocked on every way, I bought it used from ebay, but have to sell it since I needed the money for a fretless. The amp can work easily on 2 ohms with an out put power of 420 watts, and on 4 ohms with 350. For that amount of money you would not find anything better. Another amp head could be a gallien kruegger 400rb (or the 700rb), they also can be found used for a low price and are really nice amps, not the backline series.

As for a cabinet, if it is possible, try to avoid buying one used, and get one new. Hartke, SWR workingman series and Gallien Kruegger, have nice cabinets for a low price, also I think there is a brand called avatar, which makes nice cabinets for a low price too, although I have never tried one of them.

Best bang for the buck is a http://www.avatarspeakers.com/

the 2x12 or 2x10 matched to an Ashdown Mag series head would be my call for a cheap giggable rig.

Local sellers.

Shipping costs will eat you alive on cabs otherwise. Typically, I never see what I would personally consider a bargain on eBay to begin with, but after shipping fees and risking shipping damage that will not be paid for by the insurer in most instances, I regard the whole plan as a non-starter.

Anyway, I suggest you try the amp forum on www.talkbass.com for advice on this stuff.
