The Next Vanilla Ice
I'm in the market for a microphone especially for recording acoustic. I'm looking for something $200 or less.

I've heard that the AKG C2000B & AT3035 are pretty good for what I'm looking for.

Those mics would work well. Also in that price range would be the Octava MC-012 with omni, cardiod and hyper cardiod capsules. The Marshall 603's are a lot of bang for the buck as well. A Shure SM-81 kicks serious ass but might be out of the price range you mention.:D

I looked around and wasn't able to find places where they sold the Marshall MXL603s.

At Mars Music this month they have a special that includes an AKG C2000B and a pair of AKG headphones for $199. Looks tempting but I want to be absolutely sure that this mic can do the job.

It may look from the above comment that I'm looking for quantity and not quality and thats not the case, I'm definately out for quality and quality only. I want a good microphone that will get the best acoustic sound I can get with a mic that is under $200.

For $200 it will do the job. Besides if you end up not likeing it you can sell it to me for 1/2 price!!:D

The Shure 81 is about $320, but is a killer mic! Save the extra bones and get the 81.

If I end up not liking it, I'm going to demand a refund and if that doesn't work there is always eBay.

I've heard lots of good things about the Shure SM81 but there is no way I can save up that many "bones" since I'm currently unemployed. A couple of money tree seeds would work great right about now.

Nice avatar.

I got a SM81 for 220.00 used in a store,if you look around you might be able to do even better. The search can be half the fun!
The Oktava MCO12 is a good bet also for the cash, they are also good mics.Go to the Sound Room website and look there for the Oktavas

Thanks Gidge and Henri for replying.

I'm thinking of going towards the Marshall's now but I'm still going to give myself sometime to look around but if I was getting a mic today, it would be the Marshalls 603's.

One question, what is the difference between the Marshall 603 and the Marshall 603s ?

Speaking of the 603s

I wanted to let everybody know that the 603s does not look exactly like the one on the website. It has tiny differences. Also, I don't want anybody to get the shock that I did when I got my first one. The website pictures make the damned thing look as big as a large diaphragm condenser. IT IS NOT.

http://www.mxlmics.com/condens.html

If you look at that picture, the mic looks the same size as the v67G.

Now, download the file that I've attached to this post and see it's REAL size.

Kinda funny what kind of magic they can do with images, eh??

Anywho . . . just thought I'd spread the knowledge. But don't worry. Just because it's small doesn't mean that it doesn't do it's job. The 603s definitely kicks some serious Small Diaphragm Condenser ASS!

--Tax :D

P.S. Will you all still respect me after you've seen my mics? I'd feel so cheap if I knew you were only using me!

Actually, still high and dry....I think its coming though.....

I am not a professional recording artist...but I will say I have a couple older "radio shack" (yes, I said the RS word) electret condenser mics (20/20,000) that do great on acoustic guitar.

Okay....
Others say that the Marshall's are not that good a mic. I was thinking about buying one last year (I think it was zzounds, for $99.00), but changed my mind.
