I have a budget of $300 for a vocal mic. I'm recording with a Tascam 788 (if that matters). I'm shopping around Sam Ash, Musicians Friend, etc. If anyone knows of a better place to buy equipment let me know.

Thanks!

A lot of people like the Studio Projects C1 (around $229). I have one and I am pretty happy with it; however I don't have a large base of comparison. The only other mics I've recorded with are Shure SM57's and 58's.

You can get them at 8th Street Music (www.8thstreet.com). I've found 8th street to have pretty good prices and decent service.

BTW, this question would have been better asked in the microphone forum.

AT 4033 :D Most places sell em for $300 with a shockmount. Very versitile mic.

The BEST advice so far: get on ebay... look under Sennheiser microphones... they regularly have Sennheiser MD-441's go for around $280-$320. I got mine off ebay a few months back for $259. This is hands down the best mic you will find for $300. Better than the C1, better than the 4033, better than an Sm57 and more versatile than all of them. And, its a dynamic.
For $300, its unbeatable... they go for about $700 new.
Dont just take my word for it... ask around...
Peace,
Paul

Another one to consider is a Beyer M88... good on everything, great on many, good resale value. Used on ebay, $240.
