ok so this is kinda a continuation from a different thread but I figured it needed to have the topic changed.

I now want to get peoples opinions on the following monitors

berry 2031A
KRK rp-5
event ALP5
and Alesis MKII

I am going to treat my with some 703 or 705 and perhaps a few pieces of auralex. But regardless of treatment...which monitors do you think have the best flat response. I dont want too much of anything in my mix.
I went to guitar center today and A/B the KRK RP8 verses the M-audio 8 ( bx8?? I think ) and the M-audio sounded GREAT but tended to have a more pronounced low end. Sounded nice, but the KRKs seemed much more flat. So far KRK has been the best budget brand of monitors I have heard in regards to flatness. thanks guys.

Tough comparision since the Alesis are Passive. Do you have a nice amp??

I came to the same conclusion, bought the KRK rp5's to use @ home and have been more than happy with them.

I agree too. I've got a pair of KRK V4's and I love them. My brother has a pair of passive ST-8's, and they sound great with his Mackie amp. And the ST-8's were very inexpensive.

i have the rp-5s and a/bed them with the bxs at guitar center..rp-5s won

I also just found fostex makes MKII Active Nearfield Studio Monitors with 8 inch drivers in them.

no reviews on MF though. Wonder if they are any good. Are fostex monitors usually junk?

You can't condemn any major manufacturer's product line as being 'usually junk.' Like every other company Fostex make some things well and others less well. The only way to tell for sure if they'll meet your needs is to listen to them. I've never heard anything either good or bad about them, but that doesn't mean anything.

I've just got my hands on the ALP5's. Man they are nice!! Very flat, nice crisp highs, good bass without dominating and a mid-range that is defined and recognisable. Sound on Sound magazine in UK just did a review of them, why don't you check it out on their website??

I have the Behringer 2031A complete with the subwoofer. When I first got them I didn't have the sub. I had them in an untreated room and I thought they sounded great. (Of course, I had them really close together on a tiny desk with my head right in there. Little did I know that anything will sound good like that.) I had nothing else to compare them with, but on the other hand, I had been an audiophile for many years. I knew what kind of quality I wanted to hear out of them. For the most part they delivered but, after I had them for a while, I realized I was bending my mixes pretty hard to get them to translate. Most of that was probably the room's fault, but still!

I have since moved to a room three times larger and spent a lot of time and money treating that room. I can finally really hear these things well now. I have them about ten feet apart and they still sound good except for the high end. With the room compensator set flat, the highs are just a tiny bit deficient. Just enough to effect the way I mix. (Or the way I want to mix.) When set to +2dB, then they begin to sound slightly harsh or too much. I know that is only a small change but in a treated room, you can really hear every little detail and hiccup in the music. Either that or my ears are ultra sensitive in that range. (But I doubt it because I've played in loud rock bands for years.) Apparently the +2 high boost is boosting the wrong set of frequencies for my room, or else it is not doing it very evenly. I don't know. I am just not happy with that "hump" the way it is. It doesn't sound natural to me.

The mids and lows are working good for me but I am picky about my high end so, I am not sure that I love them as much as I did when I first got them.

I am seriously looking at the JBL LSR's because of the room mode calibration they have built in. I hear good things about them.

Hope this helps,
RawDepth

that helps a lot. I am leaning pretty hard towards the KRK rp-5s or MAYBE the RP-6s....guitar center has a limited edition set of white RP-6s that look really clean.

I was considering the behringers just because there is some voice in my head saying "settle for nothing smaller than an 8" sub" but your explanation I think helped me make up my mind. I dont think that I am going to find much better than the KRKs in my price range.

I also just looked up some treatment options and am going to buy some acoustic wedges, bass traps, and probably build some absorbers to hang on the walls.

The beauty of building a new house is that I can put all this in there before I have furniture or paint or anything. Makes things easier to blend in.

just 2cents.. at GC today monitor-room check out, about 30-minutes, as it was an empty room I cranked it up to a decent level. All was setup very well today in the store, all switches and wires correct. Very nice for a change.

The Dyns 5A's are my favorite at GC, but the LSR's today were really great and they have a few things on them the Dyns don't, like the volume on front and the electronics rta. really surprised how good they sounded.
Definately a tie with the Dyns to my ears.
The 6" LSR JBL's that is, I don't prefer the 8"LSR set as much. The more bass, the less upper mids it seems...in that room, to my ears. imo.

Anyway, I was nearly out the door when I saw soem demo' RP6's..."white" RP6's. When the kid said "Demo for $125 ea. out the door..last set".

well....err.....ok. :p
I can use another pair of monitors around here.

However, Those E-MU PM5's mentioned in the other thread are damn cheap too and many great reviews and mentions of the Class A discrete amp etc.
I mean the PM5 for $99 ea, its a Christmas Clearance steal.

but how many speakers does one need? :p

Not much to read about why this "white" RP6 is limited edition? Limited to what? Special Edition because of why?

I don't know??? Sounds like White Paint is about all thats "Special and Limited"...possibly the amps are beefed a bit? I don't plan on tearing them apart...they are strange looking...Like Yellow Submarine kind of?

Piano Key White!?

Well? my last post got corragulated and disappeared into internet outer space?

anyway, just 2 cents on the RP6's vs the YSM1ps.

they are no worse or better, imo. its appears to be a well made amp and heavy duty cabinet. Soundwise is so subjective, but I will say I liked them alot.
But I like my YSM1p's alot too.

So in the end, I'll probably take them back.
They were Demo's at $125 each which was great.
There is a dimple in one dust cap, I though no big deal. But the old tape trick didn't get it....and I didn't go any further as I wanted to hear them.

The White SE, for Special Edition is eye catching. The kids loved the look of the KRK's for some reason. ( they liked the RP 8's I tried at home awhile back too.)

As usual, I like the 6" better than the 8's in general. With a 8"-10"sub, the 5" would probably be my favorite pick.

speaking of 5"....I ordered some fo the PM5's mentioned too

what the hell...its more fun than fishing and playing golf. imo. :D

Yes, I have heard a few heavy hitters around here talk good about the Yorkvilles too. I would love to see a shoot-out between the LSR's and the YSM1P's complete with their respective subs.

I like `em both.

yeah, I'd love to see that too...
DYN BM5A, the LSR's. Floating a $1,000 to $1500 for a test drive at home is what it takes. I'm at the $100-$200 range.

I have heard the DYN's in the store so many times..geez.. their great.I came really close to taking them home, but I stopped as the family needed to eat that month. :p I have thought about taking my Yorks to GC, but at home is the best test imo.

Post holiday deals like the PM5 for $99each and the Demo's at GC is just frkn fun. Hell for that price you can't hardly lose...

The E-MU PM5's are selling at $349 each/ $700 pair, street $249 each/ $500pair...now their $99 each/ $198 pair.

all the reviews were good except for EM, slamming the 5" cone in general. The PM5 team put a lot of focus on the amplifier and tout the designers name, always mentioned with the Class A discrete preamp and MOSFET amplifier.

I doubt they'll be better largely better than the Yorks or the RP6's, but I'll guess their just as good. and for $99each.

Also shows some of the mark up on this stuff?
GC said they are back ordered now and have to wait to receive them from the factory?

So help me out??
they clearance them because their discontionuiung them at their store (probably too many brands not enough floor space)selling the inventory out at cost,

then they keep taking orders for them? I don't get this last part...they keep taking orders. Why don't they just say "SOLD OUT" Inventory's gone...fhk you! Too Late! whatever...

mine should be here soon. I'd like to try the dual sub's with these PM5's...that'd be too sweet.
