Berry 2031A Analysis

Hi everybody. I just want to share my story with the Truths.

Some four months ago I went through a very hard time searching for good studio monitors for my limited budget. At that moment, the Truths really surprised me. They sounded OK, and were a great deal for the buck...

I even convinced a friend/musician/neighbour of selling his hi-fi Paradigms and amplifier and to buy the 2031's, which he did.

Much to my surprise, one night I started hearing some radio interference on one of the tweeters. I turned off every equipment I had and unplugged the audio cable and the interference was still there… and on both monitors…

As I thought it could be a problem of my pair, I asked my friend to bring his own to my flat. We connected them to the power source and they caught the same radio interference.

Later, we realised that his monitors had the same problem, even at his place. Needless to say that they are IMPOSSIBLE to work with...

I called the person who sold me this equipment and informed him of this situation. Even more surprisingly, he replied that this was not the first case, and that he had had a call from another two customers a few days earlier with the same problem.

Therefore, he told me that the head of the Official Technical Service was trying to find out a sollution to this problem. Some days later, I was informed that the first pair of monitors they tested on their lab had the same RFI problems…

This means that the five pairs of Truth B-2031 studio monitors that I know of have this problem.

To add further insult to this injury, I’ve tested other speakers (cheap lousy speakers) and this did not occur. It only happened with the allegedly “FULLY ELECTROMAGNETIC SHIELDED” Truth B-2031’s…

One could think that this interferences are due to the area in which my friend / neighbour and I live. However, we are not the only ones with this problem, and the other two and the Official Technical Service live in almost the opposite side of the City.

Moreover, the place where you live should not be relevant when you buy FULLY ELECTROMAGNETIC SHIELDED ACTIVE STUDIO MONITORS…

I got a response from B... US on this matter, which states as follows:

"I read your PDF attachment and noted your comments and concerns. While I am not your distributor, I do sell many thousands of pairs of Truth monitors each year in the USA. While I can say that we have had some instances of customers with RFI trouble - fewer than ten in the last year - I can also say that it is an extremely low percentage of the units sold, and it normally involves proximity to a broadcast facility, fire or police station, or a military base of some kind. In such instances is would not surprise me to see the same symptoms manifest themselves in other units in the same general area." (...)

This "general area" is the City of Buenos Aires, which is 202 km2...

Today I got another mail from this "Company", stating that, since they had not received a reply to this mail in 48 hours, they considered this problem SOLVED...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Far from it.

Anyway, I leave it to everyone in this forum to draw your own conclusions on this matter.

Thanks for the comment Blemon, and it sucks that you had problems with the 2031

However, this is not an analysis on the 2031 It's an analysis on the 2031A monitors. Behringer just released these on 6-04-04 for distribution. There were (and I guess still are) some problems with the original monitor. Faulty power amps is one thing that I heard of.

And that's why I waited for the second release to come out (2031A).

One thing i'm curious of: The behringer warranty will fix or replace the monitor if there is a fault in it. Why would you not send them back? You have something that is not functioning correctly. Take it back to where it was purchased and get a replacement or another brand.

I have heard this before. I am sorry about your experience. I think that this may have been a problem mainly associated with the first few runs. I noticed more complaints about this problem dated fairly close to when they came out, however it is an inexcusable flaw. I think something to consider when buying ANY brand new product is to wait a while fo the reviews to come in and for some of the manufacturing bugs to be worked out. Most "lemmons" seem to appear early in a production run whether it's a car, a pair of monitors, or the latest version of windows. Like I said earlier or maybe in another post, The Truths are just fine just make sure that you can return them.

thanks for the comments.
I'm sorry I didn't realize that the 2031A were the issue here. Maybe it's because I feel quite frustrated with all this.

Anyway, I think they are still trying to sort this problem out in the Official Technical Service. Since five pairs have this same problem, I don't think that replacing them will be any good at this point...

I'm probably going to get my money back... and start looking for new monitors...... again. One thing is clear, though: No behringer this time. I'll put a bloody mortgage on my house, or sell some parts of my body and buy a pair of genelecs, mackies or dynaudios (bear in mind that the exchange rate here is 1 US$ = almost 3 Arg. $...)

cheers,

Yea. That damned dry sense of humor I have kicks me in the ass everytime on a message board. Re-reading my post, I can definitely see how I sound like a prick.

No ill will intended. I'm just having you on a bit. Nothing but love and rum in this mans heart... (Maybe I need to start using the LOL more?)

To Everyone with Behringers who has interference problems

To Everyone with Behringers who has interference problems:

This can be easily corrected by taking your audio and power cables for the monitors and coiling 4-5 turns on a ferrite choke. This way, you will cancel any RF interference coming into your speakers. Monitor manufacturers must include those in their desighns, but Behringers failed to. Ferrite coils or chokes are cheap. About $5 a piece. You will need total of 4. This is a cheap and reliable solution to that problem.

Take Care and Happy Mixin
