I've been thinking about the Bellari RP503 mic channel ($199 @ GC) or maybe the DBX 286A. What's the general thinking about these mic pres and others in their price range? Presonus Blue? I saw on another thread that FMR Audio is coming out witha RNMP, what's the price going to be on that unit? What's it sound like? I need a budget mic pre and am trolling for opinions, especially if you've used the Bellari or DBX.
thanks,
Katie

Katie, I had a Bellari MP105, and it was so noisy I gave it to a friend.
My understanding is that the RNMP is coming out by the end of the month,
and the Studio Projects VT-1 (adjustable) tube mic pre will be out shortly after that.
The website is www.studioprojectsusa.com

P.S. I've heard the quality control at Bellari isn't good.

The VT-1 may be a very good choice.

The Meek VC3Q is also $199--includes compression.

Buy where you can return!

I've found that inexpensive mic preamps ($200.00 range) tend to be disappointing in their performance and some are quite noisy, especially those with tubes. A lot depends on your mixer. If your using a mackie, or other high quality board, you may find that an inexpensive outboard preamp has little good effect on your sound. If your mixer is a budget model, you may notice some improvement with a preamp.

There is a really good thread, I believe its under "other equipment reviews", regarding the presonus blue tube that you might want to check out. The posts there seem to indicate a less than stellar performance from that particular preamp.

Whatever you decide, be sure to buy somewhere that allows you to return equipment that doesn't perform up to your expectations. That is one of the benefits of shopping at a place like Guitar Centers (30 days to return-no questions asked). This way, you can take several preamps home and try them out to see which one gives you the most improvement in sound.

Hope this helps... bigbear

YO Katie:

Forget all those lesser than ratiocinative mic pres;

Buy a Martinsound mic pre: check them out on the net.

They make two models at my last look: one is expensive and the other is more expensive.

Of course, I recommend that you try before you buy, even with Martinsound.

Merry Christmas
