Hi All,

I have a Behringer UB1204 (PRO, not FX) mixer with a Delta44 sound card and running Cubase SX 2.0 on my system.

Does anyone have a similar set up and can anyone advise on how to set it up correctly? I currently have the output one and two from the breakout box going into channels one and two on my mixer. I have the main outputs from my mixer going to my monitors/speakers.

I'm having a slight problem trying to hear the sound through my headphones without hearing the sound through my studio monitors as well (I'm heading now to swap the headphones just to make sure it's not them). Any advise would be appreciated, is this the best setup or is there better, and how would I correctly set up microphone input for recording?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Jeff

If you patch the output from the breakout to the RCA Phono 'tape input' just above the phones socket, you then can punch a button to route 'tape' to 'CTRL RM & PHONES' and turn off the button 'TAPE TO MAIN'. These controls are below the Aux Send knobs, just to the left of the Main Mix level v/u LEDs.

When you want the main mix (eg the channel inputs) on the headphones, change the switches accordingly (Select MAIN MIX as SOURCE). When you do want the breakout to play through the speakers, turn on the 'TAPE TO MAIN' switch.

Be aware that if you switch all the ins and outs on, and have in and out live on your breakout at the same time, you could likely set up a feedback loop which'll make you jump out of your skin. Shouldn't do any harm, save to your nerves - goes with the territory!

The reason the desk is labelled as it is: for folks using a PC, the computer typically takes the role of 'Tape' in an analogue studio setup...

Hi,

Thanks for the response, heading home this afternoon to try it out... let's just hope I don't burst my ear drums with the wrong combination of buttons.

Hey,

Just plugged the cables in then, I know, a bit late, but I'll be trying it out shortly. Another thing, how would I go about correctly setting it up for microphone/vocals and other DI instruments? Which outs would I use to go back into my break out box etc?

Thanks for your help.

Jeff

To patch from the desk to the break-out box you have a choice - any should be fine. You likely have 'Main Out' 1/4" jack sockets on the front of the console, 'Tape Out' RCA terminals, and balanced XLR outputs. I'd suggest only bothering with the XLRs if you have appropriate balanced adaptor cables. All those 'outs' carry a line-level mix signal.

The desk will handle whatever inputs you've fed to it. Just make sure you mute (by switch or fader) any input channels you are not recording, lest they contribute noise to the desk output.

Mics you'll of course plug into mic channel XLR sockets.

You'll have line-level inputs on all channels for instruments.

Ideally guitars should not plug directly to the desk because they don't output line or mic level signals - they should go through a pre-amp or a DI box (a lot of guitar gadgets such as multi-FX and practice amps have useful line-level outputs). Ideally they'd then patch into a channel with an input gain knob (the mic channels have these on your desk). If you're stuck with no way to pre-amp a guitar, just try patching it straight in - it's not pretty, but neither is rock'n'roll.

Line-level instruments such as electronic keyboards are perfect for the channels with stereo line input - just check the +4/-10dB switch is set so the instrument doesn't overload the input (but isn't any quieter than need be).

Make sense?

Hi,

I'm sure it makes sense, I'll just have to read it again so it sinks in. All of my outputs except for tape out are on the back of the unit. I have control room outs, main outs and alt 3-4 outs. I was considering using the alt. outs, depressing the alt 3-4 button on the desk. Would this be suffice or would this create a feedback loop?

In my case, the main outs are the XLR's, The alt. 3-4 outs are I presume a balanced outs, jacks.

I am aware of the DI boxes, thanks for reminding me though, will have to purchase one of those. I have the +10 gain switches, so that all should be fine.

Hope I'm making sense here.

Again thanks for your help.

JM

I've just taken a quick look at the UB1204 manual. I have a slightly larger desk & it has a different selection of options.

Alt 3-4 should be perfect - you can route just the channel you want to record to those outputs. The manual says they are unbalanced, but that shouldn't cause any problem at all.

By the way look out for a great pedal steel guitar player (and multi-instrumentalist and luthier) called Johnny Graffham in Sydney. We've lost him from London! I didn't even get to buy his old piano when he left, and I was IN LOVE with it... a fact I only though to mention after he told me he'd sold it cheap to someone else...

Hi,

Unbalanced is good somewhat, since they're the only spare leads I have left.

Thanks for the tips, I'm going to try it out right now. Oh and I got the headphones working separately to the studio monitors, thanks for that!

I'll keep a look out for Johnny for you, hope you manage to get your hands on that great piano! Not sure if you know who David Helfgott is, although I'm almost certain you would know, saw him on Saturday, that guy is a maniac, in a good way. Best classical concert/recital I've seen so far!

I'll stop now encase I'm loosing your interest.

Thanks again.

Regards,
Jeff
