Behringer or Mackie ?

I'm getting ready to buy a new mixer for my studio. I have been able to find reviews on the Mackie DFX12 mixer, but not the Behringer UB1832 FX-PRO. Which are the two I'm considering, anyone know anything about them?

No bashing of Behrie frome me. I know that both mixers in the same range sound the same. There is no real difference in sound. The Behringer sometimes have more features in routing etc than the Mackie. The Mackies are now made in China and have begun to see crappy QC. Buy whichever one you like. If you get a good one, either brand will do you just fine.

Make sure you turn in that registration card - I've used dozens of both and pretty much every one has died and needed fixing.

Also, if you don't need all those channels, you might want to spend the money on a nice preamp instead. Better recording, and if you are mixing everything in a DAW of some kind, you won't need all those channels.

I think I would learn my lesson after third.....assuming I wasn't so bitter toward the company after the second.

Mackie and Behringer are synonymous, especially since Mackie is now manufactured in china.

Sure - I didn't >buy< any of them. I've used them in the various audio jobs that I've worked.

As in everything, you pay for what you get. I hate the sound of Mancky mixers and B-ringer gear as much as anyone else who's used them, but it's damn cheap stuff. There aren't many alternatives in the sub-$1,000 level, which is why I recomended ditching the mixer all together - outside of live stuff, most mixers I've seen were being used as overblown monitoring channels - everything was being done in the box.

You can look up the 1832 at Zzounds.com and read the user reviews.

I think that the UB2442 is a lot more flexible for the $50 bump (4 stereo output groups, one more aux bus, channel direct outs) but the 1832 is no slouch and a bargain to boot. I've been using one (live and recording) for about 6 months now---no problems at all.

Always had good (not perfect) luck with Mackie stuff---no complaints there, either.

For budget stuff, there is one other to consider:

Yamaha MG mixers. I just got the 16/4, and having used the Behringer MX mixers, and Mackie VLZ Pro, it is far better than the Behri MX, and nearly indistinguishable from teh VLZ Pro.

Soundcraft M4, maybe M8 or M12, if you need lotsa channels. Don't screw around with the M or B stuff.
