I have ordered a terratec card with 8 analog in/out. I now need a mixer with preamps, phantom. The Behringer MX2004A seems to be the most affordable option for my budget. Question is if I plug in 8 mikes to the mixer how do I run the 8 preamplified signals, clean, to the card. The rear panel on the mixer appears to have inserts for 8 mono channels. So, if I plug 8 mono phono cables into the 8 inserts and run that to the 8 RCA inputs on the card will I get the preamplified mike signal at line level? Can I adjust the level of the mikes on the mixer channels, making level adjustments before the signal arrives at the card?

Yes, you can take level signal from insert jack.
I think you have EWS88MT card - in card's mixer window you can choose either +4 or -10 sensitivity - with matched sensitivity, gain structure is optimal, and you can control input level with gain knobs. If inserts can be switched post-fader, you can control insert output with faders.

i have the mx2004a and i use the inserts for direct preamp sends... anyway, they are pre-fader. is there anyway they can be post? mods, i mean.

No, but I actually prefer pre fader and EQ etc and let the comp take care of that at mixdown .

Just use the gain controls to set the record levels ( they will not clip before the AD chip).

but sometimes i cant get the level high enough with just the gain knob... and i dont like compression because it ruins the dynamics. well, i like it sometimes, but more often than not i dont use it...

What Mics are you using they must be quite a low output. I use AT4035s and NT3 with my Mixer and find the gain is always set near min. on close mike'd vocals etc.
