Fair deal. But if my budget was like ultra low what would be a good idea to use for mixing until I can afford a deent set of monitors. I'm talking like US$50-US$100

Sorry about that bear, I deleted the original message cos it was a bit out of line.
Obviously you don't like the truths. How do you think the M-Audio Studiophile DX4's or Samson Resolv 50a would go in comparison? These 3 are the only monitors I can get for a (somewhat) reasonable price. The DX4's are $499 a pair, TRUTH 2030A's are $499 also and samson's are $599.
$500 is REALLY stretching my budget at the moment but I do need some sort or monitors for now

Well in that price range you're not gonna get anything good, but the best I can think of are Alesis Monitor Ones. Even those are over 100 I believe, but not much more than 200. Better than Behringer though.

I'd love a set of yorkville's but they're way out of my budget. A set of powered YSM-1iP monitors will set me back $1300

No idea why but everything is oz is hell expensive. Those Alesis Monitor ones are $800 and I'd have to buy an amp on top of that. And no I'm not looking at the M1's, they are $1300.

I really think I'm stretching it with $500 as a budget. I'd rather get a cheap set and then when I upgrade my monitors, I'll use them as computer speakers.
If possible $200 would be a good figure (hence me jumping at the idea of cheap berrys)
I cant get a set cheap from the states either because we have 240V power here. Even if speakers had an external power supply I'd never get a 240V PSU with a high enough amperage to suit.

Huh? I know you're from Oz, but even you guys have transformers right?

I recently imported into NZ a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 8.2 actives from the States. Cost me $360 incl freight. Deepwater on this board is the Wharfi dealer. Send him a PM for details. I got the 100W stepdown transformers here.
The Diamonds are b-iamped 65+35W each side. They sound great
 
What about Roland monitors?
They aren't too hard to get hold of. There's 3 sets that caught my eye.
MA10A Stereo Micro Monitors $250 or $350 for the digital ones
Or the Roland MA20D Digital Stereo Nearfield Monitors for $495

How would they go?

Is that US$360 or NZ$360? I can get a stepdown transformer but it will cost me an extra AU$150 and I'd prefer to get something that'd just plug into the wall because I'm already using a transformer with my Korg D16 and I hate it. Hey there's an idea :D do you think that I could get like a double adaptor for the transformer and run the D16 and a set of monitors off it?
The only problem there is that I've never seen a US double adaptor in Australia so I'd have to get one shipped with the monitors.

Poor musicians need to learn to love used equipment.

Nothing in my studio was bought new and it works fine. Used gear is like a gift from god.

That was USD360.

I'm not sure running several bits of gear of the one transformer is a good idea. The speakers will need at least 200W on their own
 
Enchilada, I've said this a couple of times: if you're on a tight budget, find a pair of KEF Cresta domestic speakers, or a pair of IMF Compact 2, Super Compact , Compact Monitor 2 or 3, or even the ALS30 or ALS40.

These can often be found for between $20 and $150 (pair) and all these speakers will beat most inexpensive 'studio monitors' and for sure they beat the NS10 :D

IMF speakers are using KEF drivers and are built with the transmission line principle. Very deep but tight bass response and the freq response is an almost flat line. Very much detail and after hours of listening there's zero fatique.

I use the big IMF RSPM for mastering and they sure translate very well. Often people say: these are the best sounding speakers I've heard so far. And I got them for $350 the pair in near mint condition.

Think about it, I've had many studio monitors from Urei, JBL, Tannoy, KRK, Genelec and you name it, but prefer to work on the IMF CM2 or ALS40. I've worked 14 hours yesterday with the ALS40 without any fatique.

I've been googling and especially 'froogling' for more on these imf speakers you talk about... but they seem to be very rare or so... Who sells these in Canada?

I'm a student on a very tight budget too interested in recording and what I use right now are cheap Cambridge Surroundworks fps2000 (4.1).

I was very interested in the new M-audio studiophile dx4 as a starting point as it had pretty good reviews and I can buy it here for 199 canadian.

I haven't read through this entire post, but I downloaded your MP3 the other day when I finally got a new PC that could do this, and whatever you're monitoring to at the moment seems to be doing a reasonable job, 'cause it sounded pretty good to me.

I use Behringer Truths and after dealing with them for a year or so, I'm now at the stage where they're starting to frustrate me because I can hear what I can't hear if that makes sense, but when I got them I couldn't hear this way.

They're a good starter point, and if that's what you can afford and you think you need them, they'll do OK. It all takes time and gear accumulation is a constant upgrading process unless you're rich!

Not sure what people said about your MP3 as no-one had commented when I listened to it, but I thought it was pretty good!

Thanks Armi, yeah a couple of people said that the kick was limp and in the first half of one song the vocals were too soft. I suppose you would feel my pain when it comes to getting your hands on some of the gear that is spoken highly of on this forum :(
Ath the moment I'm monitoring on a home theatre system that I got from strathfield
The truths looked good to me but the only think I didn't like about them is that they only go down to 50Hz. Let me know if you ever upgrade :D
