yeh but what kind thats why i said to state which :P

What's your budget? I'm a big fan of the ART MPA Gold for about $200...add about $70 or so to change the tubes out. If you've got a bit more, then the RNP by FMR audio is fantastic too.

Does your computer have a USB or firewire interface, or both? The interface depends on how much you have to spend. You can get a respectable interface for $300, less than what you'd pay for a good gate.

As far as affordable firewire interfaces, take a look at units by Presonus and Echo Audio.

And you don't need a gate now that you've solved your gain staging issues!

i recomend art aswell beri equipment it pritty junky they just copy other brands at better prices art goes for around the same though

Hi,
Rang dolphinmusic before anything yesterday and they told me to try skiping the mixer and it sort of worked so they sent a guy just to check because my house is pritty near just to check it before sending it back and he came up with a solution on the gate and found me the samson s-com 4 with built in compressor and a limitor, a gate obv and a expander with a built in enhancer for £98 and i didnt really want to start paying that so after a while he came up with a solution and did it at £60 so i took it and i can take it back if its not really what i wanted he said but he thinks it'll sort out what i wanted to remove..

jlmedia, the guy they sent was a salesman. He sold you more gear that you didn't need. Take the new stuff back.

You solved the problem right? So you don't need a gate, I thought we figured that out. A gate is just not necessary for your recording studio applications if your gear is set up correctly.

The bit about going direct into the sound card and bypassing the mixer is legit advice. That is certainly one way of doing it. However, at that point what you need is a better sound card, not a gate.

That's really what you need to be saving up for now: a better soundcard. Take the Samson s-com crap thingy back, get your money back, and start saving for a good soundcard. Don't let the salesman talk you into a 60 pound soundcard that you can afford today--save up and get something a few cuts better.

I can't emphasize enough that you are on a path right now to waste extraordinary amounts of money on crap studio gear. You don't need a lot of gear to do what you want to do, you just need a few pieces of *good* gear.

Listen to SonicAlbert, he's giving you straight info. Dolphin Music's only concern is to make a sale. You don't need a gate. You don't need a compressor, You don't need a mic-pre (well, a low end mic pre, that is) just yet.

You can use your mixer. You will need a dedicated audio interface, not your computer sound card. I can't suggest which interface to get because I don't know what you're trying to do. But I can say that if you returned the Behringer mic pre and Samson thing, you'd have enough money to buy a decent inteface. All those other functions that Dolphin music is trying to sell you via hardware, can be done in your DAW.

That gets you 90% there. The remaining 10% is just like losing weight, it's always the hardest part and takes forever.

Good luck,

My pc came with a SoundBlaster X-FI Xtreme Audio Soundcard.. And im going to see what it does because its something to try yet,
The noise isn't helping much aswel to remeber me been on a small budget

As long as that Soundblaster is in your signal chain, no other piece of gear is going to fix the noise it creates.

It gets so frustrating reading these threads with people asking for advice and then when getting good advice they completely ignore it.

I know this kid is only 14 but come on:confused:

That soundcard is designed for games, not proper audio recording. The A/D conversion is absolute crap. If you're serious about getting decent sound into your computer, you need a proper interface. Audio interfaces come in lot of different configurations and at lots of different price points. Some of them include preamps, some don't.

It seems to me that a good solution for you would be something like a Tascam US-122 (USB connection) or Presonus Firebox (Firewire connection). These units are pretty reasonably priced, incude usable preamps, and will be a BIG improvement in quality over the SoundBlaster card. You'll be able to skip the mixer and the Behringer pre altogether.

If you REALLY want to keep your mixer or pre (although I don't know why you would), you could consider something like an M-Audio 2496 PCI card (I'm assuming you have a PC not a Mac). This would replace the SoundBlaster card (it's not hard at all to swap a PCI card) and, again, give you a BIG improvement in quality.

Spend some serious time researching your options. Read the manuals, understand how it hooks up to other gear, and learn what it takes to make it work. Self-education is a powerful tool. I know you probably want to just rush out and grab something and start using it right away, but you'll be way happier, and get better results, from taking your time to pick the gear that will do the best job for YOU.

Wouldn't it just be better if this kid bought a UX1 or UX2 from Line 6? I mean, wouldn't that get him on the right track? The whole "Band-Aid" thing is horrible. A gate? Really? Come on, buy something that has it all, then concentrate on using it, learning it...

Absolutely. That was essentially my (long-winded) point.
