Behringer Compressor...

Hey,
I am thinking about buying a Behringer compressor in the next week. I have been looking at the Composer Pro, but lately I saw Musician's Friend running a special on the Autocom Pro for $70. I was wondering what the difference in these two units are. Is it worth $20 more to get the composer pro? Thanks

Don't own either, but i believe the main difference is the option of manual (as opposed to automatic) control over certain parameters like attack and release time.

If it's your first compressor, i'd go for the full-featured one so you can experiment with the settings and learn from it.
 
I have the illustrious Autocom pro. For 70 bucks you cant beat it.

Attack, release, ratio, threshold and output are all fully controllable. It has a gate, but its too slow to respond for my taste, and it has an enhancer, but that also sucks IMO, makes the sound worse…. But the compressor section is completely useable.


Oh, its 2 channels too, which can be linked for stereo use. Definitely a worthy piece of gear for those who are afraid to plop down the 200 for the RNC.
 
Have 'em both and the only diff between the 2 is:
The Autocom is equipped with a "ENHANCER" to boost hi-freqy's lost during compression while the Composer Pro instead has a
"PEAK LIMITER" for additional control of signal peak/overload when the unit's LIMITER capabilities cannot cap or roof sudden
peaks during tracking.

Both are decent units affording one with basic dynamic processing
w/o adding unwanted sound artifacts. The Composer provides
slightly better than average levelling on bass, especially on low-end freqy's and percussive-technique control of peaks when slapping bass.However the "PEAK LIMITER" function has to be boosted to @ least 9db's for any semblance of control .
AutoCom is simply your basic processor. Nothing outstanding but just simple operation also w/o adding any unwanted coloration or
additional sound. I rarely use the ENHANCER function as it "seasons" the the comp'd signal with a mid-rangy sound similar
to sonic maximizers and the like.
You can't beat the price for either unit and will give the user some
satisfaction. But if you decide you want a clean,clear & transparent processor, check out the RNC! One of the best!
But you can't go wrong with either Behringer processors either!

i was just guessing that the "Auto" referred to automated parameters. I guess not... :(
 
My next compressor is going to be either the 4600xl or the 2600xl. Good deals... I use an autocom - it isn't the smoothest sounding compressor, but it gets the job done.
 
Wait a sec... is Mr.Q saying something good about a Behringer product? Can it be?
 
You might also want to check out the DBX 166XL Compressor/gate/limiter. I have two of them and they are fantastic. It will run you about $250.

He always has spoken good about their compressors (and a few other products)...it was his recommendation that made me look into the Autocom, which i bought, and am very happy with.....

Yo' Gunther, though all of Behringers gear-line is either hit or miss,
I have only TWO complaints about Behringer....

1st complaint I have is against their
ENTIRELY USELESS,UNRELIABLE,UNWORTHY, INEFFICIENT,HORRIBLY CONSTRUCTED, TOTALLYSUCK-@SS TO THE NTH DEGREE,vomit-inducing, line of mixers!!!!! :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad:

and Incompetence!

But I will give Luv to Behringer on their line of compressors for their cost-vs-performance ratio. Great bargain!!

I have a Composer MDX2100, an Aphex Compellor and three RNC's.

If you don't need the built in gate or dual mono features the RNC kills the Composer hands down in the sonics department.

In fact in real nice mode the RNC sounds vey similar to my Aphex Compellor which costs a shitload more than a RNC! ;)
