Hey i've got my new sound card comin' in, got a phantom power mixer, now i need a decent condenser mic for the $. Which of these would you recommend and why? And if you recommend the mxl 990, should i wait till i have enough money to buy the package with the mxl 991?

let me just add, I'd be using this for vocals and recording acoustic guitar

MXL V67g

It wont cost that much more than the two you mention and is a pretty good all rounder. I think the C-1 and the MXL990 are pretty much rubbish, sorry if that offends anyone.

Here's my setup:

Behringer Xenyx 802 Mixer
Behringer FCA202
Behringer C1, AT2020, Shure SM57 and SM58

The C1 came with the package that I purchased in my beginning days of recording, and as a first mic I think that it is FAR better than the MXL990. Sure, it has that high-end sparkle that most Chinese mics have, but with some EQ'ing and figuring out what works no one would ever guess that it's a <$50 mic. The 990 is muddy, and to get a decent sound out of it takes far more time for a beginner than the C1 IMHO.

I will say, now that I've "moved up" to the AT2020, I rarely use the C1 anymore. I believe that is a great mic to get you started, but once you get the hang of it you will find the need to upgrade...

Of the two options, the C1 is definitely the better choice.

Thanks guys. I may change my mind on this now. How about the AKG PERCEPTION 120? I found one for 40 bucks at guitar center used. Should I jump on it? I also found an mxl 990 for 30.

I would go for that 120 before the 990.

Where in the US are you? Post your location.

really quick, how do you guys feel about the mca sp1 I had never seen one until i found it used at guitar center. It doesn't seem like it would be all that great since it was only 20 used

Well that is half priced for you see those microphones only cost $40. new ~ just to give you the heads up.

I looked at it a bit more. akg was gone when I came back. Is it true this mic has the same components (besides the outside) as the mxl 990?

Not sure but you always have it modified. But at that point why not get one that you don't have to. Do a search here and take a look at the Stella CM-6

It's pretty sweet. I know these show up on ebay occasionally. I'll keep my eye pealed. Mic's show up used at guitarcenter pretty cheap on a regular basis. I'm gonna check my local sam ash and guitarcenter to see what they have. I'll also be checking the web. I'll keep you guys posted and let you know when I find something and buy it

Take a look here in the free ad forum. Microphones are for sale now and come up all of the time.

What about the Nady 1c usb microphone? The only reason I'm considering a usb mic is because I'd be sharing it with my girlfriend who doesn't have a mixer (no phantom power)

Just get that for her, and you can up grade her as you get more and more pro gear.
