Peavey makes a line of cheap mixers with good pres (IMHO). For what you're talking about, probably the PV6 (4 pres) would be a good match, but there's also a PV8 (also 4 pres), PV10 (6 pres), and PV14 (10 pres).

Alright, now I'm considering wether or not I should get the mixer or just the pre-amp...

I don't really need a mixer right now, but I know I will in the future, but I also want a good pre-amp or buying a good mic would be pointless.

I'm guessing the pre-amp on that PV is at least decent enough to get a good sound with the Studio Projects mic?

If so, then I may go with the mixer instead of just a preamp.

not necesseraly

a dedicated pre amp is something I still need to get having said that I have focusrite pre's in my control 24 desk but I would still like a good mic pre

if I was going to advise in anyway

go for the mixer to start with & then look at getting a dedicated mic pre

That's what I was thinking too.

I'm gonna go ahead and get the mixer, (thanks dga), and later on down the road get a dedicated preamp.

Thanks again for all the help.

agreed

except the dmp3 is made (distributed?)

by m-audio

not studio projects

and

i don't know that you can get it (new)

for close to $100

OOPS I meant the VTB1.... for 100$

I have the DMP3 and it cost 160$

Sorry for the misinformation.

Some jackass gave me a negative rep chicklet because of my post in this thread... and didn't have the guts to sign it. It's a cowardly way to say that you disagree with what I wrote. If you had any nads, you'd at least post your disagreement in the thread or sign your negative rep.

for a newbie I must say he got off lightly on this thread

mind you Ez & mx_mx aint been here....................................YET :p :D  :D :p

I take it you think the cool regs out here flame newbies just for the heck of it and being the follower you are you'll score points with them by acting the same? Is your penis really THAT small?

I run an SM57 into my UB802. The preamps are a LITTLE noisy (they hiss).

I'm using a Yamaha MG10/2 mixer. Very clean pres, IMO. It's a nice small mixer for those who don't need many channels.

Are you recording distorted electric guitar or clean jazzy electric? I wouldn't use a condenser for recording rock guitar, you might break the diaphram and that's no good.

a 57 and most dynamics

need a fair amount of gain

so when you crank it up

you crank up the noise too

it would probably sound cleaner with

a condenser mic
