Hello everyone. Well, I finally got past all the "honey do's" and got a day for me. So for those of you who are interested in a home built console, here is some pics of the assembly beginning. These are of prefitting the legs to the platforms for mounting electrical conduit in them. Haven't got that done yet but you can see how things begin to go together. Heres the links. I'll post the rest of the assembly as I get to it today.

For those of you who don't know the story, I built this 8 years ago, and just moved, so I am assembling it in my temporary studio so I can play with it. Ha! It took 3 months to build, working a few hours each day. It is all welded steel frames, hardwood endcaps, black gloss plastic laminate cover hoods, leather wrist pads, stainless steel legs, colored plex light strips, and other goodies you will see as I assemble it.

The are a few pics of the platform bottom. Sorry, don't know which ones, but it was for my own reference once I cover them as cables go up through the leg brackets and out the side of the platforms. These platforms are a temporary "floating floor" substitute, as the console legs were designed to allow cableing to enter troughs built into the floor. The legs bolt to the brackets, giving the illusion of floating on the floor as the legs do not have "feet" Also there is a section view I drew to build from on Rush's thread about console hieght.

Here it is. The end of the day and I didn't get near as far as I wanted to, which is usually the case as things take me three times as long as I think they will. Usually because of little crappy things that require on or two trips to the store etc. Today was no exception. But I did get the platform put together, the cables(some) in the legs, the legs mounted and the main frame in place.

Still have to detail a few items and then install the endcaps, the rear hood, the wristpad/headphone module brackets, and a belly pan. Then comes the equipment and wireing. Sounds simpler than it is. Those will get mounted during the week. But for now, thats all I can do, and tomorrow is back to work day. But I'm happy with what
I got done in one day considering how my days go. I can't wait for the fun stuff. This is the structural but I like to mount all the goodies that really make it a console. I took some more pics of what I ended up with today.
So here they are.

Rick,

That's looking good. I can now begin to put together a visualization of what you've shown in your CAD drawings. Keep us posted on your progress since I want to see how this engineering marvel goes together.

Darryl.....

Hey thanks Darryl! Yea, this stuff is the bla's. The rest of it is the goodies. Ha! You'll see. And as far as "engineering marvel", thanks for the compliment, but I don't know 'bout that. Just some simple welding and frames. The concept for the legs comes from my disgust for cordballs:D I've delt with cords for so long I really began to hate em. Tripping, spilling drinks, and all the stuff cordballs cause in small rooms, not to mention visual crap. And electronic crosstalk. So, I decided right from the beginning, the main criteria would be to HIDE ALL THE #)*%@%^&#)(* CORDS!!!!!!! ARGGGGGGGRRRR!!
Well, it isn't no AMEK, but for a homebuilt mixer enclosure, its not too bad. Actually, once all the equipment is in, it works pretty doggone good. At least for my needs.
Anyway, this is only the beginning, as I have many more little treats up my sleve:p
Thanks again.

um, wow.

Did you weld the top today? Or just bolt it all together?

oh, heres a longitudinal section.

Hi Frederic, oh no, I welded this up long ago. This just bolts together with flat head socket screws. The legs bolt to the platform brackets at the bottom and the angle iron
brackets are welded to the legs, which bolt the frame in place from underneith. Everything else bolts to the frame. I'll start attatching that stuff tomorrow night. Hey, thanks for today. You made my day frederic! What a surprise it was:D And thanks for the cable answers. I didn't have time to get back to ya! Busy busy busy today. You know how that is, only two days on the weekend.

was good chatting with you too Rick...

I'm totally into the free exchange of ideas and bullshitting endlessly :)

What are the dimensions of your side posts, the angled ones... they look like 3x6 or somethign there about, maybe 1/4" thick?

I really, really like how there are no legs in the way of human legs, a design I've been trying to figure out all along.

Want to be able to "wheel" left and right without hitting my legs on anything... furniture or cables.

You are one "Metal-Making-Magician" there Rick!

Looks way cool!

Much better than my 2 saw horses and a piece of plywood console. ;) :D

Sawhorses? Geez, you have to be different, don't you.

Whatever happen to stolen milk crates and deck screws?

ROFL

frederic,

Are you forgetting?!? Michael is from Texas :) *EVERYTHING* is about "horses" down there :)

Yep...

Now me on the other hand... being from Iowa and all, I took my chances trying to build an all corn console stand... but in the end it didn't work out.

I'm guessing my next attempt will be made out of either bacon or beef.

Velvet Elvis

take corn & cob, dry them out, glue them end to end, and use them as legs.

heh-heh

BTW, I spent a week in Iowa one day (for a wedding). Tipton, actually.

Was odd renting a pickup :)

I do have to say, of all the places around the country, the air was the freshest out there. I stepped out of the airport, and magically all my allergies just went away for the four day excursion.

Came back through Newark Airport, almost choked to death walking to the parking lot.

Tipton isn't too far from me... did you fly into Cedar Rapids or the Quad Cities?

I stayed in Newark when I was in New York last month :)

Spent mucho time in the airport there :)

My wife and I flew into cedar rapids.

I'm 30 minutes from Newark, you should have said something, I'd have been happy to meet ya and buy ya a drink. Same for NYC, I work there often.

Hello gents! Didn't have time to do anything tonight. Maybe tomorrow. I do have to repaint the large frame first. I got scratched like a MOFO, while I was moveing. That damn frame is HEAVY. I had to drag it up into the moving truck. Crap, that was a good paint job too. Oh well. Maybe this will be the last time. Opps, wait, this is only the temporary studio. Ha! MAYBE one more time. We'll see. Anyway, thanks for the comments. I DO 'PRECIATE IT!!

fitZ:)

ps. Hey VE, talk about "corny" consoles!!:D Ha! Just make it "HUSK"y. hehehehe!!

Rick,

Yeah... I'm more for "beefy" sounds now... so I'm thinking I'll just dry out some beef jerky and super glue planks of it together... make a jerky-lam board to build my console stand out of ;P

frederic,

I *LIVE* in Cedar Rapids (ok... actually Marion... but we JUST moved out of Cedar Rapids proper last February).

If you ever come back to Tipton, let me know..

I'm typically out there (or dayton oh) once a year, depending where a large group of "fangle" friends want to meet. Last year it was Tipton because the guy living there was getting married. The year before, it was Dayton (which I drove - long drive for sure!).

I usually "host" the same thing in early october, and they all drive out here including the guy from Tipton, all with trailers and cars in tow.

Next time I'm out that way, I'll be sure to drop ya a note, and maybe we can have drinks or something. Same for you too, if you're ever out this way (Newark, NYC, I'm 30 min from both) you can check out how not to build a studio, or I can meet you where you land for drinks or whatever.

Sounds like a plan!

I'm sure we will be back in NYC sometime over the next couple of years... my wife ran the NYC Marathon and I'm sure will want to do it again.

Nothing like watching 3 small children in a 12 x 12 hotel room while your wife is gone for an entire day to do nothing but run :)

I'd have to be chased by someone REALLY big and REALLY angry to even consider running 1/2 a mile let alone 26.2 miles... *snicker*
