I am kind of an Tenor-Alto singer and i just started recording. I know you have to stand up straight when singing but are there any other things i can do that can slowly develop a better singing voice for me over time? Thanks

diaphragmatic breathing, you want full expansion so when you breath you get the most out of it, check out vids on youtube as its hard to explain over text, also drink tea, and sing with every song you know mimic different vocal styles and genres to just get your chops up practise makes perfect.

Consider a voice coach. There is much you can do to improve your voice, and also much you can do to damage it, sometimes permanently.

If you want to buy something to help, I like the Singing Success program. I got it and at first you think is not doing anything but stick with it and you will get a lot better.

Never listen to your family - they are biased in your favor and will lie to avoid hurting your feelings.

Actually some people who smoke end up having really interesting voices ;)

Warm ups! Before and after singing just like working out muscles. Look up some youtube videos!!!

the thing that helps me the most is singing in public and gaining confidence, in my opinion confidence is one of the most important vocal "techniques" I've had. Your voice will never sound good if you aren't comfortable with it and confident in it. And confidence comes through lots of practice and singing for others (don't listen to what your family says like someone above said)

Perhaps Americans are different but I tend to find that by and large, family members are more likely to tell you that you can't sing well, even when you can !

Smoking is the worst thing you can do as a singer... Ask me I know....

Depending on the genre, the opposite could be just as useful :D

I mean what would Tom Waits say to this?

Even Tom Waits needs some sort of warm up, even Death Metal singers, or they'll want last the tour.

The fastest my voice ever progressed was while I started recording my first song. There is something nice about singing a song then hearing what you sound like being played back to you. If you have any kind of ear you can usually pick out the trouble areas and hear what you need to do to work on them.

Another thing. Just like listening yourself on a voicemail or a home video; your voice will always sound strange to you the first times you hear it played back to you. I know alot of amazing singers that hate their voice just because they never got used to hearing themselves in the monitors and mix. Get used to the way your voice sounds in a room. Sing through a mic and monitor, record your voice, sing in the shower/bathroom. Being confident in your voice is half the battle in my opinion.

hi! nice to meet you all, i'm new :)
When i was studying at college i used to sing, i have a nice voice, but i'm not a professional. But i wanna be. I don't even know where to start... Any advice? I live in MA now

Treat learning vocals like you would any other instrument. It won't just happen, so read the instructions, do the work, and make sure you enjoy yourself. :) I know this because I've been pretty good at doing the reading part and the enjoying myself but woefully slack about the work bit. So I'm still below mediocre. Good luck, and work harder than I do...

Poor breath support is chronic amoung new singers. Try this. Lay on your back with a book on your stomach. When you breah in, the book will rise. Immulate this when you stand to sing. Your stomach should go out as you breath in. If it is going in, you are not going to have enough air to produce the resonate vocals you want.

One thing a voice teacher can do is help you find your range. Once you know what range of notes you can sing comfortably, you can change the key of your songs to match. When I first started out, I tried to sing every song in the key it was written in, which didn't work. After I capoed up I found it much easier to stay on pitch.

smoke nor drink

I neither smoke nor drink, drink the water for feeling . Can't talk loudly.
