Sorry im a beginner and i dont know much about mixing with hardware...but i want to get an idea first....im only into plugins...but i really wanna learn since i have this piece...

Ok so I have a midiman audiofile...AKG 3000c....a 2 channel mixer....a DBX compressor....Bluetube.....

I am planning on getting the Delta 1010 (more outputs/ins) and a patchbay...

basicly for the time being i was just fooling around with the DBX and recorded straight through it....

(i record in cool edit pro)

so i would go like this

Singer -> Mic -> Bluetube Pre -> DBX compressor -> midiman audiofile -> Tracking into COOL EDIT PRO...

I compress very lil just for the flavor...

BUT NOW THAT I WANT TO GET A PATCHBAY! How will this work?

I will record like this?

Singer -> Mic -> Bluetube Pre -> midiman audiofile -> Tracking into COOL EDIT PRO...

then

the TRACK THAT I RECORDED WILL GO LIKE THIS?

Uncompressed Track from Cool edit -> Patchbay -> Compressor -> Patchbay -> Compressed Track back to Cool edit

IS THIS HOW IT WORKS?

1. How do i control the settings? will it play realtime so i can set the knobs while listening to the track? Or do i make a preset of my own and just mixdown...check it out and then repeat the process if i didnt like it?

2. Do i need a bigger mixer if i add an eq of some sort or something else? Do i control all stuff in the rack with the mixer?

Please add some more info thx

I read the Homerecording patchbay explination but i didnt really get it...

Thank you so much!

this is not a cross post....i posted one in RACK...but i want it deleted since i doubt anyone is interested in answering in that section....

Don't forget that your DBX will always be connected to the patchbay, as should the I/O of your sound card and the outputs of your BlueTube. So when tracking you would use patch cables to connect the gear differently than when mixing from within CoolEdit. This is the great thing about patchbays, you get flexibility and the ability to *easily* use your gear in a myriad of different ways.

Each piece of equipment will be connected to the rear of the patchbay, and then you'll label the front so you can quickly see where to make the connections.

What's very important is for you to understand how patchbays work regarding half-normalled, normalled, and de-normalled. This is the key to the whole thing, and you have to understand this to set up your patchbay properly.
