So I just got a Tascam 388 for cheap, and its getting biased right now. I have around $200-$250 to spend on microphones right now for recording with it. I already have 2 crappy dynamic mics I have with my P.A. & a MXL r144 ribbon mic I received as a gift. I plan on using the built in preamp on the 388 for recording. The 388 doesn't have phantom power, So a condenser + phantom power may be out of my budget for now.

An indication of what you would like to record might help guide further responses.

The music I make is close psych/garage rock, So I have a 4 piece drum kit, my guitar amp, my bass amp, a hammond m3 organ & Vocals. I'm not at all into the whole "lo-fi" recording obsession, but I bought the 388 knowing it can add a certain "vibe" to recordings on it.

OK, so you'll want dynamics. Well, for a start you could look at the good old Shure SM57. Also, there's a company called GLS Audio (just google it) who sell copies of the SM57 and SM58 called ES57 and ES58 respectively. I bought a handful of each for live church music and they sound good. Some say as good or better than the Shures. And they are as solid as bricks.

The GLS Audio mics are substantially less expensive than the Shures.

Anyways, hope this gets you started. Paul
