If you're considering the FIREPOD, I'd spend $50 more and get the MOTU 8Pre instead. Its ADAT lightpipe interface makes it much more expandable, and I'm a lot more impressed with the reliability of MOTU's hardware.

It's a FireWire interface just like the FIREPOD. The main difference is that it provides ADAT optical digital I/O for additional expansion if you ever need it instead of S/PDIF coaxial I/O.
I can't answer the PC question. Never touch the stuff.
The analog outputs give you more routing options. I sometimes use additional outs on the firepod to send a soft synth out to a distortion pedal or an amp, and then record it back again through one of the inputs
