After reading Beezoboys post, I almost didn't feel like posting.
I just scored a Studio Projects B3 for my birthday. Haven't recorded anything with it yet, but initial A/B tests with my old mic (CAD M37) show a definate improvement. It just seems to be a fuller sounding mic. But the main reason I bought this mic was the switchable polar patterns. I am anxious to try some M/S combinations on acoustic. Eventually, maybe I'll get something posted in the clinic(HA!).
This mic doesn't seem to get as much attention here as the B1, but I think it's the same mic with more features.
It's no U87, but it didn't cost me a grand either!
I bought it locally, and it cost me about 20 bucks more than I could have bought it for online, but I wanted to support my local independant music store (He's a friend of mine). But I saved the shipping charges, and I get it TODAY! So it's all good.;)

Hey I have a C-1 and 2 B-1's. Good mics and very useful.

I just didn't think I was going to see a deal that good on an old U87 very often so I bid. I really didn't even think I was going to get it so I put a bid of $1300 on it when it was at 1100 and I ended up getting it for $1293. I think the "MIC GODS" stepped in and helped me out.

The same thing happened with a Beyer M88TG. I put a bid of 175 on it when it was at $90 and had 2 and a half days to go. The mic ended up at $172.50. Once again I think the "MIC GODS" stepped in so that I could own this mic as well.

Happy Birthday and sorry to "take your wind."
- Mine is on Feb 1st and I have a gig that night. Well at least I am getting drunk either way! :)

Hey Beezo,

Congrats on your birthday, and on the new(used) mics! Just try not to get arrested!

It's the same story as the C1 versus the C3.

Both the B1 and C1 being substantially cheaper than their multipattern counterparts are, due to that very fact, going to get more press in the 'bang for buck' department.

I haven't made a direct comparison between the B1 and B3, but inspite of the multipattern option, the C3 is a much better mic than the C1 IMO.

For me the C1 is too hyped in the upper mids. The C3 is also somewhat hyped but not as much AND higher up in the range which makes it a little more 'airy' and a little less aggressive than the C1. Still on the right material the C1 can sound excellent... it's coloration just makes it more selective as to what it will work with and what it won't! But in this world that applies to almost everything!

YMMV ;)
