sorry for such a big first post...
im spillover from recordingwebsite.com (doesnt move fast enough for me, not enough people)

right now i am using this mic set up (for drums)

beta 52 on kick
sm 57 on snare rack and floor toms
sometimes a pg 52 on floor tom
and overheads that i do not wish to use ever again because they do not sound very well to me...

i just picked up an audio technica 3035 for vocals, acoustic guitars, and such...
i've been told this ldc is great, and from what ive heard it does wonders, and is very versatile, and works well with a lot of voices...

i am perhaps looking for a mic that's somewhere in between a 52 and a 57 for the toms...
something a little fatter than the 57 and a little fuller, warmer...

my snare sound is coming out pretty well... so im happy with the 57 for now

im in love with the beta 52
but what should i do for overheads...
there's a lot of different opinions so ill make my situation as clear as possible for my use...
the overheads arent going to be used as "room mics" as such...
these are for moderatly close mic'ing to cymbals to pick them up...
the room isnt great sounding...so i like to keep it more to the kit sound

ive tried a few different mics and im not really enthralled with the sound im getting
im guessing i have to step up to some sdc's...

let me know what you guys think...
toms and cymbals are my main concern right now...
any other opinions or ideas...please let me know :)
thanks

Just for the full picture, tell us what preamps you are using, too.

Here's a simple, but good sounding budget drum mic package...

Kick... Shure Beta52 because you already love it (my favorite is the Sennheiser MD421)
Snare... Shure SM57 (my favorite is the Beyer M201)
Overheads... Oktava MC-012's (my favorites are the AKG 451's)

im sorry but i wasnt clear on teh money...damn i wanted to be clear heheh

anyways as far as money...i can not go overboard and tremendous...
im looking for low priced decent, and mid ranged, really good but not the best answers (so that's two answers)

preamps hehe...
i know how i should be doing this...and i am looking into new preamps...
i use the preamps on my mackie 1604vlz pro, and i dont like them really much at all, cuz they are pretty much trash...

id just like to work out the overhead situation before i step up the preamps.. :)
befcause i see the overhead situation being resolved in the next week and a half, and the preamp situation taking a month or two....

Overheads... Oktava MC-012's (my favorites are the AKG 451's)

guitar center just ended their sale on those today...
but when i went they were out of stock and the guy promised me the sale...
im gonna go there tomorrow and bust his fucking face in if they dont give them to me :)

mackie 1604 vlz pro preamps trash? i disagree. The quality of mackie stuff isnt amazing but its better then other mixers in the price range. Ive cut some good mix's with just the 1604 preamps.

the oktavas mentioned above are far from expensive. most everyone here are homerecorders so non expensive is normally top priority :D.

You want warmer toms? 57s should be pretty decent, although i prefer the Sennheiser e604s over the 57s most of the time. But that will run you about $300 street price for the pack. Might just wonna stick with the 57s for a while there and get some good overheads first.

Would be cool to get MD421s for the kick, or a e602 if you can, then move the Beta 52 on the floor tom (which i hear works awesome) but that might be out of your budget too.

You should be ok with your preamps, but upgrading to a RNP or two would be good.

Danny

well i have another thread going on about preamps...
in about a year this studio is moving from home environment, to a place we are building, nice room, control 24, etc etc...
im trying to build up some of the other things im going to get now...for use between now and then...so i can get more cash for the projects i record, less money to take out on our loan and so forth

Yo Ork! See if GC can pull in the Oktavas from another store. At their current price, they're a no-brainer for overheads.-Richie

for overheads I like the Marshall MXL603's

for toms, i like the sm57's but if you need a little more intense, try to find some used Peavey PVM 520i's...........

Run (don't walk) to Guitar Center and get a pair of MK-012 mics. They are 2/$99. GC is dropping Oktava mics and they will not last long. TRY THEM OUT FIRST at the store. MAKE the salesman plug them in and listen. These are great mics for the $$ and will be gone soon.

The deal referenced on the Octavas is excellent. If you cannot get those then the MXL 603s are highly recommended for overheads.

As to the toms, my recommendation is the Sennheiser E604. I have heard nobody who dislikes them and the clip option is very conveniernt to setup in the middle of crowded drum sets

welp sir...
ive got a pair of oktava mc 012's :D

they said that the sold about 400 thousand this month...

i guess this is because oktava models are being discontinued no?

Yah they are. I was planning on buying some but i missed the sale.... you lucky bastard.....

orksnork - how come a control 24 for the new studio? dont forget you are only limited to using protools with it, but thats not really a bad thing. But dont plan on using Cakewalk with it.

I wasnt too impressed with the Control 24, which is why im probably gonna sell mine soon, but maybe not.

Danny

well if you are...we shoudl talk...it may end up in a sale, or may end briefly depending on what stage we are at, but it's worth a shot :)

Now that you have the MC012's make sure you even need to use individual tom mics...

well if this other guy doesnt buy it then i will definately get ahold of yah. However, i might not be willing to sell it without selling the HD2 with it. Unless someone else wants to buy the HD2 individually.

I will let you know in a couple of weeks or so.

Danny
