J to the R O C
hey all. I've finished my second backing for a friend of mine...I really dont know the first thing about rap to be honest. So don't hate me for asking this...but is a beat a drum beat? Or is it like, the drum and bass groove or the 'riff'? I'm kinda confused to be honest.

Actually, yeah. I spend most of my time playing acoustic tracks or some soft rock, so I'm handy at guitar. I've rarely used the midi side of things to sequence anything. Like I said I'm helping out a guy I know.

I'm actually lookign for some pointers, I've been listening to alot of Rage Against The Machines Renegades stuff...all covers of early hip hop stuff. It's good. And I have an idea for a melody...is the melody the beat? And if so, can the beat be the hook? Or is the hook something different?

I don't know about rap but I'm pretty sure the beat is the backing track...drums, bass, and whatever other little instruments or samples they throw in there. (everything but the lead/vocals).

The hook is usually just part of the song or beat that "hooks the listener in" and keeps their attention.

Could be anything from a couple notes, to a whole measure or verse. It's usually people's favorite part of the song.

Thnaks Danny...I have a good riff...but I just double it with a guitar for the chorus/hook...I funno if the riff is good enough to carry the song.
