Can anyone tell me if there are any small, simple 4-trackers that are battery-powered? The Porta 02, for instance?

Zoom has several.

Yeah--well if you look at the other post, you'll see that I tried to remove it once I realized that it was more appropriate in this forum than in the "recording techniques" forum. If the system allowed users to delete their own posts, I could've done so.

I have zoom mrs-4 that i haven't used since i built my DAW setup. It worked really good on batteries and lasted for something like 16 hours (i could be wrong) It was $250 when i bought it, but i think its somewhere around $200-230 nowadays. I would offer selling you mine for cheap, but its pretty beat up.

Thanks for the info on the Zoom digital 4-trackers.

Are there any cassette tape 4-trackers that are battery-powered?

I had a Tascam battery powered cassette 4-track a few years ago. It was awful :( I gave it to my son.. he threw it away..

Awfulness aside, do you recall what model it was? The reason I'm looking for a battery-powered cassette 4-tracker is because I want to be able to take one with me to the beach or the park or wherever, and use it as a sort of sketchbook with a small, portable keyboard, a mic and so forth. I have a Tascam 464 for home use, but I can't seem to come up with composition ideas as easily at home as when I'm in someplace outside. Fidelity won't be an issue with the hypothetical battery powered 'tracker; I'll just be able to tell if a song structure is shaping up.

Yes,...

the Tascam Porta One, Porta Two and Porta Two HS are the only battery powered cassette 4-trackers geared toward "field" recording, to my best recollection.

However, if you wanted to use a car-cigarrette adaptor (to your car battery), you may use a great many Tascam cassette 4-trackers, such as the MF-P01, Porta02, Porta03, Porta05, Porta07, 414, & 414mkII.

;)
