Bass Traps

If you're on a budget do what I did: buy as much fluffy pink stuff as you can from
Home depot/lowes/whatever, stuff it in the corner from floor to ceiling and when you get more money/time cover it with something. Then later down the road I "prettied it up" so-to-speak. Hell you could just stuff that in the corner and hang some big movie theater style curtains over it and it wouldn't look too bad. Promise it will work better than the auralex. You can't treat ceiling/wall corners as gracefully but the four corners will get you to a point (if you're like me) where you say "damn this acoustic treatment really is the ticket!" And you won't feel insecure about throwing down some real cash. Don't fall for marketing hype I did that and spent money on a lot
of auralex and cheap reflections filters and was thinking
"This acoustic treatment stuff is overrated." Couldn't have been more wrong. Not that that stuff doesn't have its place....

Only problem with that is the itchy fiberglass fibers - I never recommend anyone working with the stuff or leaving it uncovered. The new yellow fluffy stuff' is better that way, though.

+1. I built mine out of scraps and it was sooo easy.
If you've got old skirting boards and a few other scraps, why not try building a frame just to see how it goes?
If it goes well you can look into getting some rockwool. ;)

A staple gun is handy for covering the thing but if you don't have tools a bunch of flat head thumb tacks will do.

Harbor Frieght has staple guns (includes a whole bunch of staples, too) for $6. The frames can be put together with nails or a screw gun. It's not rocket-building!

Doesn't every non lazy band member have a staple gun for posting flyers anyway? Or one of their girlfriends?

Last time I posted my girlfriend, I forgot to take her down after the gig. I think she's still stapled to that tree, if only can remember where.

Not if you leave it in the bags we are talking bass traps not broadband absorbers after all.

Yeah, I've read Ethan, and probably a few other true experts here, say that you're better off just throwing them in the corners still in the bag, than not having any trapping.

I have heard that as well. In fact I record scratch guitar tracks in a small room that has exactly that in the corners.

Well, we can't all afford "Scratch studios", as well as our regular studios, now can we? Mr. Big Shot.

:D

LOL! Naw man, quite small basement studio. Well, maybe more than some have. I have separate treated drum room and control room. A small room on the side I use to isolate guitars so when tracking drums in their own room, I don't have to hear them in my ears in the control room. By 'scratch' I mean they are there for the drummer to play to. Nothing I do not plan to re-record in a larger well treated room.

That little room has rolls of fiberglass stacked in the corners until I build the walls and treat another room that I have down in the basement. Ok, I guess it is kinda big for a home studio....

Wow

Not sure what the 'wow' was meant for. Trust me, this studio of mine is a dirty/dusty rehearsal space looking cave that happens to have a bit of time/money spent in making it work.

You should see the beer bottles and cans left by the band that has been in here since last Friday. Looks like last call at a bar...

Fiberglass insulation comes in plastic overwrap bags - but I would think that reflects a lot of the sound waves, no? Maybe only the high stuff, the low still penetrates?

Maybe I'm just a hick but thats impressive to me. My whole house is only 1500sq ft and I'm confined to the garage. I can vouche for you though the "fluffy pink stuff" really does work it actually worked better than my 6" 2x6 panels of diy rockwool traps I had straddling the corner. I don't have the measurements i did with my now broken ecm8000 but I had a null that was acting like a vacuum and a node that made me cringe everytime i hit a low c# on my bass. It was like the brown note. My rooms not perfect by any means but how it was before...

Yeah it will reflect highs but as long as you're not putting it in an area where first reflections is gona hurt you you should be fine. I think if it was that reflective the market for diffusers would be a little more competitive. Theres so much misinformation in sites like gearslutz where someone goes in and asks for help with their
Mbox and mxl mic and they leave thinking they need a truckload of owens corning wrapped in guilford of maine, a neve 1073, api, u87, sm7, lavry golds, or yadda yadda yadda or else the universe will fall apart. Ideally I would agree with most of the things they post but you have to draw a line somewhere and to me it was when they were arguing about x $300 cable vs y $300 cable.. I don't have those first world audio engineer problems LoL must be nice.. Though I have seen some people (ae graduates) *cough cough* full sail *cough cough* who are plugging magamis into rodes into mboxes in auralex "treated" rooms with cheap monitors talking down to me explaining why protools sounds better than reaper and why i need to use a monstercable/mogami... Who will refuse to actually record anything or show you anything they've done in their studio because their studio is not good enough for them..nothing against anyone or any school personally just trying to illustrate my beef with hear-say vs actual experience.

100% agreed.

And no to mjb, from what I understand the plastic does nothing to impede absorption of low frequencies. At what frequency things start getting reflected? I have no clue. Mr Brandt?

no wait....

I think that was 420.

I don't remember now. :D
