Which do you use? I have two basses that I want to do setups on and being as I rarely play them I'm not really sure what I want to go with. Basically I want a versatile sound, and not too thick of a gauge but not too thin either. My 5 string has ridiculously thick strings at the moment and my 4 string seems to have ridiculously thin ones. The guy at Guitar Center seemed to be suggesting strings to me based on price so that was no help at all. Any suggestions?

Get a set of round wound for the 5 & flats for the 4.
Price is an issue, well at least for me. I have Fenders flats on my semiacoustic & GHS boomer rounds on my solid body.

I have fender flats on one bass and rotosound flats on the other. The Fenders are ok if you want the sound and feel of flatwounds for not much $, but they're not great. My next set will be Thomastik-Infeld jazz flats.

yeah-- i've played bass for a while now (maybe about 16 years) as my third instrument (mostly for recording and/or filling in friends' bands) and have gotten pretty decent at it, and i finally tried flatwounds earlier this year on a 4 string (because it was strung with them) and love them now!

I've always used round-wounds; I started with GHS boomers, but since I put Rotosounds on the Fender Musicmaster I've always gone back to those for both Fenders and the Epiphone Viola. I feel like the Rotosounds really bring out better tone to each bass.

If you use roundwounds, you can always play with the tone to gain a little versatility.

GHS Boomers Roundwound Med Light gauge ... tried the Rotosound Steel strings and they are a bit too bright for my tastes (with my Stingray anyway). I prefer the feel of Nickel over Steel also ...

YMMV of course

I'm using Thomastik-Infeld jazz flats on the G&L and Thomastik-Infeld Superalloys on the Conklin. I'd recommend Maxima Golds but they are very light weight.

I use Dean Markley SR2000's because my Conklin needs taper-wound strings.

I use TI Jazz flats on all of my bass guitars. Because I love them.

I have been using GHS Bassics roundwound boomers.
The sell them at Wallmart for $12.00   (I'm cheep)

I don't dig flatwounds on anything other than fretless basses.

I'm still using sets of Roundwounds that I pulled of my basses when I was touring 12 years ago.

But I play my bass long enough to write a part, and record it, which takes about 5 hours a year.
