Today I went in to by my first set of bass strings and I realized I had no idea what was good. I've bought ernie ball power slinky guitar strings for years, but in the nearly two years that I've had my bass I've never broken a string (although I know I should have changed them long ago). My question is what do you people think is a good bass string. What brands and sizes do you prefer and why? Hope you help.

I play 5 string bass and I like the Warwick Black Label strings.I like the way they feel and they have a tapered B string which I feel sounds better than the more common ones that keep the full diameter over the bridge.I use the .45 to .135 guage set on one bass I have and the .40 to .130 set on another which has a slimmer neck and string spacing.

I use Elite Stadiums .45 to .135 (I have a 5 string too) I dont use a tapered B string but I think they do a set that has a tapered B in it. The heavier the gauge the better I would say.

I've experimented with Fender Superbass, Ernie Ball, and Dean Markley, but I always come back to DR. Strong flexible, durable, and feel good on my Jazz bass. I use the Hi-Beams and have been curious about the Low-Riders.

I REALLY like GHS contact cores. Very bright and they stay bright a long time.

unfortunately, it's not easy to go out and try a bunch of bass strings on your bass so this is a pretty good idea. on the other hand, it has a lot to do with your bass and the type of sound you want.

i really like the ken smith "burners" on my warwick. i usually use .045 to .105.

blue steels used to be the rage several years ago, but they're just not meaty enough for me.

I've been playig for 20 years and found that there are vast differances in strings when compairing lengh of brightness. All round wound strings start off sounding great.
GHS Bass boommers are such a strng. If i were goig to the studio and doing some recording these would be my string of choice!
Did you know that Keith Entwisle who? Bought four differant bass gutiars to aquire the strings! And used each one for the four fills/leads in the studio. He felt the strings lost there bark after one use.
Though for long lasting bark I use Elixir on my 79 FPB and love the sound after 6 mounths and I play every day.

I've tried several but always go back to good old Rotosound Swing round wounds. Unfortunately I never bothered to remember them. I play fingerstyle and sometimes pick but rarely slap (I want to preserve my bass and my thumb). I quite liked Ernie Ball regular slinkies but they didn't suit my Aria as well as the Swings.

Cheers,
Mike.
